The Irregular at Magic High School is set in the late 21st century, a time in which huge technological advancements have enabled science to bring fabled concepts like magic and sorcery into reality through science. Magic is now taught as a technical skill, and at the prestigious First High School, the student body is separated into "Blooms" and "Weeds"; those who achieved high scores on their entrance exams, and those who did not.

The Blooms are allowed into the First Course, while the Weeds are reserved for the Second Course. In this configuration, the Weeds are treated as second-class citizens by their fellow students. Siblings Miyuki and Tatsuya Shiba find themselves separated by these delineations upon arrival as Tatsuya doesn't do too well on his entrance exam, condemning him to "Weed" status. Despite his low test scores and inability to use magic, Tatsuya possesses an incredible technical understanding of its uses, not to mention his abilities in combat that make him "the irregular at magic high school".

The Irregular at Magic High School anime is based on the manga based on the novel written by Tsutomu Satou. The series was originally published on the self-publishing site, Narou from October 2008 to March 2011 before being taken up by ASCII Media Works' Dengeki Bunko imprint from July 2011, running for 32 volumes until its end in September 2020. This print of the light novel featured illustrations by Kana Ishida. The Irregular at Magic High School manga based on the light novel was serialized in the Dengeki Daioh magazine from April 2012 to June 2020 and featured illustrations by Yu Mori.
