Updated September 13, 2023, by Christopher Norman Worcester: Now that players around the world have had time with Starfield, certain missions have garnered considerable attention from fans. 'Burden of Proof' is a perfect example of this occurrence. With this in mind, this guide has been updated to include a full video on every piece of evidence available for players to find, while also clarifying and improving the information that was previously available.

Burden of Proof is a mission related to the tied Faction quest line of The Crimson Fleet and UC SysDef in Starfield. In this mission, players will report back to the US Vigilante’s Lieutenant, Officer Toft, where they will exchange evidence that they have collected across the various Crimson Fleet missions and Overworld locations of Starfield for Credits, XP, and a unique reward.

Players can collect Crimson Fleet pirates for the Brig with each evidence that they give to Toft, and there are over 20 pieces of evidence to collect to complete the Burden of Proof quest. A few of these are missable, and players need to hand them in before completing The Eye of the Storm, which is the final faction quest for this group. Once players give Toft all Burden of Proof evidence in Starfield, they are given a pretty good reward.

Many of these pieces of evidence can be found and collected after their respective missions are completed. However, it’s probably a good idea to collect them during the mission, to save time on backtracking, and just in case the location has changed.

Deep Cover Evidence Location

Players can start their search on how to get all Burden of Proof Evidence in Starfield with the first piece located in the Deep Cover mission, which is the first Crimson Fleet faction quest that sees players get in Adler Kemp’s good books to join the Fleet. Players can find the Naeva Meetup Evidence behind Kemp, on a table located in Cydonia on Mars in the Sol System.

Echoes Of The Past Evidence Locations

During the initiation quest into the Crimson Fleet, players are tasked with venturing to find Kryx’s Legacy with Delgado on the abandoned UC prison facility, The Lock, which can be found in the Kryx System on the Suvorov planet. There are two pieces of evidence to find during this third Crimson Fleet faction mission, Echoes of the Past:

Carter’s Gig Evidence

echoes of the past evidence location 1

Located in Carter’s locker in the showers in the D-Block section. It is not an item that players can miss by doing this quest, as Carter's Gig Evidence is an essential pickup to progress through.

Warden’s Log Evidence

echoes of the past evidence location 2

The Warden's Log Evidence can be found in the Warden’s Office, which is found by following the yellow-painted rooms and up the stairs. This area is also involved in the Echoes of the Past mission, but not an essential item. Players can find this Evidence on the desks in the corner of the room.

Breaking The Bank All Evidence Locations

The Crimson Fleet main mission 4, Breaking the Bank, has players will be working with Evgeny Rokov, the Captain of Siren of the Stars, a former Crimson Fleet member.

Request Denied Evidence

The first evidence of this mission can be found in the Captain’s Quarters, located on the second floor as soon as players board the ship, towards the far end of the floor. Head to Rokov’s room, and players will find the Request Denied Evidence on his shelf next to his bed.

Dumbrosky’s Embezzlement Scheme Evidence

The second piece of evidence relates to following the quest with no deviations. This means players cannot kill, and have to follow the tactical mission. Players need to involve themselves in Dumbrosky’s companions and work with Gabriel Vera, paying him is a safe bet to ensure they get the Dumbrosky’s Embezzlement Scheme Evidence.

All The Best There Is Evidence Locations

Huan’s Talk Evidence

Meeting up with Huan Daiyu in the Well on New Atlantis, players can easily pick up Huan’s Talk Evidence by walking into Kay’s House, and through to the kitchen. They can then proceed upstairs to begin the fifth Crimson Fleet Faction Quest, The Best There Is.

Eubanks & Woods Evidence

the best there is evidence location 2

Located once players reach Gabriel Vogel’s Lab. Players should try and get this evidence during the mission, as it requires some tactical espionage. The Eubank and Woods Evidence can be found in the backroom of Gabriel’s office, sitting on a station with some files.

The Key Evidence Locations

Now that players have full access to the Key, it’s a good time to take a break from the Crimson Fleet Faction quests in Starfield and hunt down all Evidence to complete Burden of Proof, as progressing through the main quest is unwise, considering the last two missions will essentially lock players out of finding every Burden of Proof evidence in Starfield. So, to begin, players want to head to the Key and find three pieces of Evidence:

Request A17 Evidence

the key evidence location 1

Found in Jazz’s Ship Service office, just to the right of her computer terminal, players will collect Request A17 Evidence.

Mira’s Demise Evidence

the key evidence location 2

Mira's Demise Evidence is located in one of the first-floor rooms in the Bunk. It’s near the end of the hall to the left, just look out for the spray-painted skull and star on the floor. The correct room is easily visible thanks to weights and a bar on the floor next to it.

Voss’s Parts Evidence

the key evidence location 3

Sitting next to Delgado’s Computer, which can easily be found in the upstairs area of the Key in the Operations Center, players will find Voss's Parts Evidence.

Doctor’s Orders Evidence Location

To find the Gennady Ayton Evidence, head to the Key’s Clinic location and talk to Samina. Asking her if she needs any help will start the Doctor’s Orders quest, where players will venture to the Clinic Space Station in search of Samina’s contact, Gennady Ayton. In the Clinic, he can be found in the Office, and directly behind him on a stack of computer parts, they can find the Gennady Ayton Evidence.

Reclaiming The Past Evidence Location

Head to the Last Nova bar on the Key and talk to Bog. Something’s been bothering him, and he will send players on the Reclaiming the Past quest to find his former partner’s ring. At this Ecliptic facility, players can find a Military Crate that holds the Message For Bog Evidence audio log.

Red Mile Evidence Location

Traveling to the Porrima System, players can find the Red Mile on Porrima 3. Inside, they can find the Chunks Heist Evidence on the left side of the bar inside the Red Mile.

Gagarin Landing Evidence Location

Located on Gagarin in the Alpha Centauri System, players can find the Chiroptera Evidence at Lizzy’s Bar on Gagarin Landing, which is just a short walk down from the spaceport and before the statue on the left.

HopeTown Evidence Location

Also in a bar, players can find the HopeTown Raid Evidence at The Pit Stop, which is located on HopeTown, planet Polvo, in the Valo system.

The Den Evidence Location

Players can easily locate The Den in the Wolf System, orbiting the planet Chthonia, as it’s a neighboring system to Alpha Centauri. Once docked and boarded inside, players can head through to the table in front of the giant neon sign that reads “Open” to collect the Kreet Offer Evidence.

All Absolute Power Evidence Locations

With all Evidence locations from the Key, Overworld, and Crimson Fleet side quests complete, players can continue forward with the Crimson Fleet main mission 6, Absolute Power. There are three pieces of Evidence to collect in this mission, all of them on Neon.

The Big Score Evidence

This can be found when players enter Madame Sauvage’s Bar. On the first floor in the kitchen, head right to find a bedroom, where The Big Score Evidence is sitting on a bedside table.

Meeting With Bayu Evidence

A piece of evidence can be found inside the safe in Generdyne’s Office inside the Trade Tower’s Generdyne Industries floor. Players can either pick the lock or persuade the receptionist, Ji Nashida to provide a key. Afterward, players will have their Meeting With Bayu Evidence.

Ayumi’s Offer Evidence

ayumi's offer evidence

Located in Euphorika’s Members Only Lounge. Players will need to spend some credits to access this exclusive area, but once inside, players can find the Ayumi’s Offer Evidence on a table behind Ayumi Komiko.

Eye Of The Storm Evidence Location

The final evidence is located in the 7th Crimson Fleet quest, Eye of the Storm. This is the last quest before players need to make an important decision regarding their allegiance to the Crimson Fleet or UC SysDef, so if players want to get any use out of their Evidence collection, then it’s best to proceed and pick up the Mortem Obire Evidence next to Jasper Kryx’s body.

Burden Of Proof Rewards

To hand in all Burden of Proof Evidence, players need to head to the UC Vigilance and speak to Lieutenant Toft. In doing so, they can provide their findings to her, in which they will be rewarded with a stack of Credits every time. When provided enough Evidence, they will complete the Burden of Proof quest, and receive some important backstory on Loft’s character, and how she came to be a Lieutenant. It turns out she was a rough kid who joined the Crimson Fleet long ago, but found a way out thanks to Commander Ikande. She will thank the player for providing all the Evidence and listening to her story, and give them the unique legendary pistol, Memento Mori as well as a few more thousand Credits to add to their fat pile of sci-fi cash.

Starfield is out now on PC and Xbox Series X|S.
