While exploring the various available solar systems in Starfield, gamers will come across several planets, moons, and even ships orbiting these astronomical objects. Players can interact with these ships by hailing them from afar, or they can get closer and board them to check what's inside.

This works for just about any ship in the game, not just those related to missions. This guide will show players how docking works in Starfield, whether it's for a mission if it's an enemy ship, or even if it's just a ship with a friendly crew that asked the player to come over.

How to Dock Onto a Ship

docking onto the eye station

In space, it's only safe to move from one ship to another by docking. Thankfully, this process is quite simple in Starfield, so gamers shouldn't run into too much trouble doing it.

Even though other types of traveling activities can be done simply by using the Starmap, players must be in control of their ship in the pilot's seat in order to be able to dock.

Before attempting to dock a ship, players must activate their Scanner and select the ship they'd like to board. Gamers can choose Hail to talk to the crew onboard, or they can choose Dock to connect the two ships. Once this is done, players will be able to board the other ship simply by leaving theirs.

If the Dock option isn't available, gamers should try to get closer to it, as the two ships can't have more than 500 meters between them for it to work. Some ships are also not available, and fans won't be able to board them unless they engage in combat first.

How to Board Enemy Ships

successfully docking

Some ships, such as the Eye, are always available, but there are others that gamers will only be able to enter if they force their way in if they'd truly like to explore their contents and take their cargo.

To successfully board enemy ships or any other type of inaccessible ship, players will have to take down their engines. If the ship's health is fully depleted, it will explode; gamers must target the ship's engine by unlocking the Targeting Control Systems Skill in the Tech Skill Tree in order to be able to dock.

Once the engines are down, players can attempt to dock, but they must be sure that there are no other enemy ships - this does not work while active fighters are nearby.

Starfield is now available on PC and Xbox Series X/S.
