Sega has revealed a brand-new mobile game titled Sonic Dream Team, which will be launching later this December exclusively for the Apple Arcade service. The Sonic franchise has seen plenty of action in 2023, between the Sonic Origins Plus collection, the launch of Sonic Superstars in October, and the final update for Sonic Frontiers, the Final Horizon. While the quality of these releases has varied, Sonic fans have had no shortage of new games to play. It seems Sonic isn't slowing down just yet.

Sega HARDlight is a UK-based developer responsible for several mobile games based on the Sega's IP, including various Sonic games like Sonic Forces: Speed Battle. When the studio's official Twitter account teased fans that something Sonic-related would be announced, many were speculating it could be a brand-new game from the developer. These theories were based on the studio's past projects, along with a rumor of HARDlight hiring for a new Sonic project last year. It turns out those fans were correct, with Sega officially announcing Sonic Dream Team.

What Is Sonic Dream Team?

Sonic Dream Team is a 3D platformer that takes place in a whimsical and dreamlike world, launching December 5, 2023 as an Apple Arcade exclusive. The trailer showcased a total of six playable characters who all have their own unique abilities. These characters include the usual suspects like Sonic himself, Tails, Amy Rose, and Knuckles, but also include longtime Sonic the Hedgehog supporting characters Rouge the Bat and Cream the Rabbit.

Sonic Dream Team Features

  • 6 Playable Characters (Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy, Rouge, Cream)
  • 3D Platforming Gameplay
  • A brand-new character named Ariem
  • Apple Arcade Exclusive

While these two characters had prominent appearances in spin-offs and auxiliary media like the IDW comics, the last time that Rouge was playable in a 3D platformer was Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), and Cream's last playable appearance in a 3D platformer was 2004's Sonic Heroes. Alongside the veteran characters, the end of the trailer briefly highlighted a new ram-like sheep character, who is named Ariem. Sonic Frontiers and comics writer Ian Flynn also confirmed on Twitter that he is a part of the game's writing team.

The trailer of Sonic Dream Team highlighted unique robotic Badnik bosses along with the playable characters' unique abilities, like Rouge having the ability to fly through the air. Other story details were confirmed after this reveal trailer, such as Dr. Eggman looking to use the mysterious Reverie gemstone for his evil plans. Many are hoping this game isn't exclusive to Apple Arcade forever and that Sonic Dream Team will eventually release for consoles.
