Actress Zoe Saldana has recently revealed that she is seriously interested in making an MCU Gamora prequel film. The beloved Guardians of the Galaxy character who Saldana is referencing was ultimately sacrificed by Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War.

However, Saldana ended up reprising her role one last time as her past self in Avengers: Endgame. In the film, she time travels between the past and the present and sets out on her own in order to take down Thanos for good. After Thanos is defeated, Peter Quill and the other Guardians go out to find her. While Saldana's Guardians of the Galaxy co-stars are set to appear in the upcoming Thor: Love and Thunder, Gamora's name is nowhere to be found on the cast list. Due to her apparent absence, fans are taking this as a sign that Saldana will only be reprising her role in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Franchise director James Gunn has recently hinted that the film will be the end of the superhero team and Saldana has also spoken out about what it was like to return to her character after so much time had passed. However, time in general seems to be a topic that Saldana is particularly keen on pursuing, especially when it comes to Gamora's past identity and her journey to the MCU.

In a recent interview for Jake's Takes, Saldana claims that out of all the characters she’s played in her career, the one she’s most interested in exploring the past of is Gamora. After all, she did get to experience a little of what it was like to play and explore Gamoa's past self in Avengers: Endgame. She stated, “I would say Gamora, I feel like that taster [of Gamora's childhood in Avengers: Infinity War] made me incredibly curious to know what that planet was like, what her species was like - because they were completely wiped out of existence. And because she carries such a big weight on herself, and to get to know why and where that comes from was really great.”

Although Saldana has her eyes set on creating a prequel movie specifically for Gamora, she may be getting some of her desires fulfilled through Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 instead. Many are coming to the conclusion that since the movie will take place in a post-Endgame universe, it will most likely be relying on flashback as its main method of narration. If that’s true, then Saldana's wish to fully unpack and deeply interrogate Gamora's unprocessed childhood trauma could be a very real possibility. At the same token, the very fact that Saldana is bringing up her wish to explore Gamora's past further could very well mean she knows she isn’t going to get that chance in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3.

Phase 4 of the MCU seems to be very full and jam-packed, leaving very little room for a potential Gamora prequel movie. However, if fans petition and lobby for the film to be made, anything is literally possible. Regardless, fans can expect Gamora to be a central character in the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, whose presence is crucial to the overall plot line of the film. A prequel Gamora movie may not be in the immediate future, but it could be on its way some day sooner rather than later, especially with Saldana bringing attention to it.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is scheduled to be released in theaters on May 5, 2023.
