Zenless Zone Zero has a colorful cast of charming characters, but as with all gacha games, players will need to get lucky if they want to add said characters to their list of playable units. Master Tapes and Encrypted Master Tapes are two of the main resources you'll need to expand your roster, and you're going to need a lot of them.

Anyone who has played a HoYoverse gacha game should be very familiar with how all of this works by now, but with all the brand new things in Zenless Zone Zero, some players might find themselves confused as to where to go or what to do. Here's a quick overview of both kinds of Master Tapes

Where To Get Master Tapes In Zenless Zone Zero

Basically, Master Tapes (and their Encrypted versions) are this game's main gacha currencies. They appear as old school film reels — regular Master Tapes are black and white, while Encrypted Master Tapes are colored.

Master Tapes are for pulling characters and items in permanent/standard banners. Meanwhile, Encrypted Master Tapes are for pulling in limited banners .

Players can use their tapes in Zenless Zone Zero's Signal Search menu, where all the gacha banners are. Both types of Master Tape can be purchased in the in-game store using Polychrome, ZZZ's equivalent of Stellar Jades or Primogems from Honkai: Star Rail and Genshin Impact respectively. As such, you can get Polychrome from the usual HoYoverse game sources:

  • Main story quests
  • Side quests
  • Hollow Zero rewards
  • Primer rewards
  • Inter-Knot rank-up rewards
  • Chests
  • Events
  • In-game cash shop

It's also worth noting that during the launch of the game, the developers promised that players would get 100 free pulls for Zenless Zone Zero as part of the new player experience. However, you won't be able to claim all those pulls at once — they're staggered across several layers of progression, which means you'll have to actually sink a bit of time into the game before you can get your free Master Tapes and Polychrome.

How To Use Master Tapes

Zenless Zone Zero Exclusive Channel

As mentioned, Master Tapes are specifically used for pulling in standard and limited gacha banners in the Signal Search menu. Click or tap on the TV icon on the upper right side of your screen, then select the banner you want to spend your tapes on. Signal Search only becomes available after you complete the first few intro missions of the game

If you've played any of the other HoYoverse games before, then the pulling mechanics here are more or less the same. Every 10 pulls, you get a guaranteed A-rank character or item. Meanwhile, S-rank characters or items are guaranteed after every 90 pulls. The neat thing about ZZZ's gacha menus is that you can see how many pulls you need to make to reach the next threshold, which is a very welcome quality-of-life change.

After you spend your tapes, you'll get the chance to earn even more tapes via the Residual Signal and Fading Signal tabs in ZZZ's Signal Shop. Use enough Master Tapes, and you'll eventually earn enough of these to buy additional tapes in the shop.
