Highlights

  • Fans are hopeful that a Switch port of Twilight Princess HD is on the horizon, especially since a reliable leaker has hinted at its existence.
  • Despite the success of other Wii U ports to the Switch, Twilight Princess HD and Wind Waker HD remain missing from the lineup.
  • Nintendo's plans for the future of the Zelda franchise, including potential Switch ports, may be revealed during its June 2024 Nintendo Direct.

The potential existence of a Switch port for The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD has seemingly been corroborated by a reliable leaker. Many of the Wii U's games have since been ported to the Switch, though there are some notable exceptions. For one reason or another, Nintendo has yet to bring the HD remasters of The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker and The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess to its latest console, leaving the games trapped on the Wii U.

Considering how poorly the Wii U sold, it's a real shame that these Zelda remasters have yet to be ported to the Switch. Fans have been waiting for the announcement for years now, with reliable leakers and insiders suggesting that not only are such games on the way, but that they are effectively "done" and it's just a matter of when Nintendo decides to announce and release them.

A skilled gaming and anime cosplayer channels the Twilight Princess version of Princess Zelda with an impressive Legend of Zelda-inspired outfit.

The latest leaker to back up those claims is Midori on Twitter, someone with a reliable track record when it comes to industry leaks. While discussing a new Zelda project with the codename Edward, someone suggested that the game could be The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD. Midori responded by saying, "I do not know why Nintendo is not releasing it yet." The wording here certainly suggests that Nintendo has Twilight Princess HD for the Switch waiting in the wings, but just hasn't pulled the trigger yet for whatever reason. This is still an encouraging update for fans hoping to see the game on the Switch, as Midori has a very strong track record when it comes to sharing insider information.

Zelda: Twilight Princess HD Rumored for Switch

Nintendo has been fairly consistent when it comes to new Zelda game releases. The stretch of 2015 to 2017 saw a new release every year, though the franchise then moved to an every-other-year cadence. Breath of the Wild dropped in 2017, Link's Awakening released in 2019, Skyward Sword HD hit store shelves in 2021, and finally, Tears of the Kingdom launched in 2023. Going by this pattern, Nintendo may not release a new Zelda game until 2025, but then again, it could instead release the long-rumored Switch ports of the Zelda remasters later this year to help fill out its second-half of 2024 calendar.

As it stands, the Switch's second-half of 2024 lineup is a complete mystery. It's possible Nintendo will fill it up with rumored ports like the aforementioned Zelda remasters, as well as the long-rumored Switch versions of Metroid Prime 2 and 3, but it's also possible that the company has some unexpected games in store. All will be revealed soon enough, as Nintendo plans on revealing the rest of its 2024 plans at its big June 2024 Nintendo Direct, which is currently without a specific date, but is expected to take place within the next couple of weeks.
