Tears of the Kingdom players will quickly find out that some collectible items only grow in areas with cold or dry weather. A prime example are the safflinas: Warm, Cool, and Electric. Depending on where players are looking, they'll need to equip cold/heat-resistant gear when farming safflinas.
Cool Safflinas only grow in cold areas. As such, Link will need to wear the appropriate armor to ward off the cold. In Tears of the Kingdom, Cool Safflinas can be used for cooking a meal with a cold-resistant effect. They can also be used for upgrading one of TotK's many armor sets.
Cool Safflina Locations
Cool Safflinas tend to grow at the base of cliffsides in the Hebra Mountains and the Tabantha Frontier areas. However, players can also find them at the Gerudo Summit in the Gerudo Highlands. As such, players will want to wear level 2 cold-resistant gear before looking for the safflinas. They can also wear one piece of cold-resistant armor and equip a weapon that's been fused with a Ruby or an Igeno Talus Heart.
If players have the Camera from the "Camera Work in the Depths" side quest, they can take a picture of a Cool Safflina, they can track it as long as they have the Sensor+. The Sensor+ is obtained from Robbie ("Presenting Sensor Plus") after completing several prerequisites including one of the "Regional Phenomena" main quests (ex: "Tulin of Rito Village").
Gerudo Summit & Gerudo Highlands Skyview Tower
Players can find two Cool Safflinas beneath the snow at the entrance of the Gerudo Highlands Skyview Tower (-3966, -1260, 0426). If players haven't done so already, they'll need to use Ascend to get into the Skyview Tower for the first time. This involves going through the nearby Meadela's Mantle Cave (-3996, -1257, 0427) and sailing down the underground river. At the end of the river are four posts sticking out of the water. Position a wooden plank in the middle, then use Ascend to break into the tower.
- The other Cool Safflinas are near the Gerudo Summit at -3815, -1011, 0571.
- Between -3815, -1011, 0571 and the Vatorsa Snowfield, there's a path that leads to two more Cool Safflinas.
- Finally, players can find another Cool Safflina at -3980, -0817, 0676.
There's an Ice Gleeok in the middle of the Gerudo Summit. Players can either defeat this monster before looking for the safflinas, or they can do their best to avoid its attacks.
Hebra Mountains
Players should warp to the Eutoum Shrine (-3506, 3570, 0387) at the Goflam's Secret Hot Spring. Head a bit northwest to the cliffsides, and jump down to find three Cool Safflinas near -3246, 3609, 0287.
Where to Use Cool Safflinas
Cooking a Cool Safflina will result in getting a meal with a cold-resistant effect. This is good to have if players are lacking cold-resistant armor. Since Cool Safflinas are considered a food, they can't be cooked with monster parts to create elixirs.
The safflinas are also used for upgrading the Desert Voe Set to level 2. This may be worth upgrading thanks to the armor's Set Bonus, which is unlocked after upgrading all pieces in the Set to level 2. A Desert Voe Set with its bonus will grant Shock Resistance, meaning Link won't drop his weapons when hit by electricity.
To upgrade armor to level 2, players will need to help the Stable Trotters play a serenade to two Great Fairies. The "Serenade to a Great Fairy" side adventure becomes available when players accept the Lucky Clover Gazette side adventure. They'll then need to go to Woodland Stable and build a carriage for the Stable Trotters.
After this side adventure, the remaining three Great Fairy Fountains will be marked on the map. It doesn't matter which Great Fairy is helped next. As long as there are two "unlocked" Great Fairy Fountains, Link's armor can be upgraded to 2-stars/level 2.
