Some fans are starting to make theories about Ganondorf’s plans in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, including one that thinks he could take inspiration from Thanos. The longtime villain of the Zelda series will appear in the flesh once again in the upcoming Tears of the Kingdom, with the latest story trailer finally giving players their first look at Ganondorf's updated design. Not only that, but prolific video game voice actor and Critical Role star Matthew Mercer will portray the Prince of Darkness as he menaces the land of Hyrule once more.

Like much of the plot of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Ganondorf’s goals remain largely secret for the time being. Many Zelda fans have come up with wild theories regarding the evil one’s plans and role in Tears of the Kingdom after his presence was teased a few years ago, with some even suggesting that he could be a playable character during flashbacks of his younger days. That doesn’t seem to be the case after the most recent Tears of the Kingdom trailer, and now one player is suggesting that Ganondorf’s latest machinations could be similar to those of another powerful warlord out to bring death and conquest to the universe.

A Reddit user by the handle of JuanK713 recently noticed that the necklace Ganondorf wears in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom appears to have slots placed along it - not unlike the Infinity Gauntlet worn by former MCU villain Thanos. In a post made to r/tearsofthekingdom earlier this week, they suggested that the titular Tears of the Kingdom could work like the Infinity Stones, with Ganondorf trying to collect them all to gain greater power like Thanos did throughout Avengers: Infinity War.

Other fans in the comments section have built off this theory by hinting that Ganondorf could succeed in gathering the Tears and “snapping” Hyrule out of existence, forcing Link to go back in time to prevent this as the Avengers did in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame. Some have noted that in the latest Tears of the Kingdom trailer, not all the descendants of the Champions of Hyrule have their Tears, meaning that Link will have to search across the game’s open world to find them before Ganondorf does.

What Ganondorf does with these Tears if he gets his hands on them is still a mystery for fans to solve before Tears of the Kingdom launches next month. If JuanK713’s theory is correct, he could be looking to wear them around his neck as he unleashes their great power upon the people of Hyrule in a way that would make Thanos nod in approval. Of course, the slots on his necklace could just be a coincidence, but players will have to jump into The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom to see the truth for themselves.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom releases May 12, 2023, for Nintendo Switch.
