The sales numbers for Nintendo's latest game, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, are already off to a strong start. The game was released earlier this week and was expected to do big numbers for the publisher. Now it appears that the numbers for The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom may be better than anyone was expecting.

The initial teaser for The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom was released all the way back in 2019. At the time, it was referred to as an untitled sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. As time went on, the title of the game was revealed and Nintendo began to show off more and more details steadily. Now it appears that the company's long-term promotion strategy has worked as the game is already off to a strong start.

According to Games Industry.biz, the new title has quickly become one of the best-selling video games in the United Kingdom. As of this writing, the game has already become the eighth best-selling Zelda game of all time in the UK, beating out Skyward Sword, The Wind Waker, and A Link Between Worlds. In terms of pure sales revenue, it is the fourth-highest-earning game in the franchise. In addition, its opening sales record outpaced Hogwarts Legacy in terms of physical copies by roughly 54%. These figures, however, do not account for digital sales. These new sales are coming in spite of the fact that The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom was review bombed early on.

It is worth noting that when Tears of the Kingdom's predecessor was released, it quickly became the best-selling game in the entire franchise. In fact, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is one of the best-selling Switch games of all time and became a new benchmark for the system's single-player experiences. Early on, however, it was fairly clear that its sequel would also do very well.

As early as October 2020, it was predicted that Tears of the Kingdom would be the best-selling game in the franchise. The game was the subject of multiple leaks and early piracy thanks, in part, to an exploit in early models of the Nintendo Switch, but it doesn't appear to be hurting the sales of the latest entry in the franchise. It remains to be seen whether the game manages to become the franchise's bestseller, but for the time, the sales for Tears of the Kingdom appear to be off to a very strong start.
