The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom takes players on another journey through Hyrule, fighting enemies in a search for Zelda. Players will encounter fearsome battles with monsters of all shapes and sizes, so maintaining health is crucial.

Link's health is displayed as small, red hearts at the top of the screen, and once those are depleted, it is game over, but players can heal to prevent that from happening. The tutorial has no exact instructions for healing, but the process is simple when players get going. So here's how to heal in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.

How to Heal in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom

Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Link

There are several ways for players to heal in Tears of the Kingdom. A quick, on-the-go method is to eat raw foods such as fruits, meat, and vegetables found in Hyrule and the Sky Islands. When players go to their inventory, they can see how much each item heals, but most raw ingredients restore a quarter, half, or single heart. Select the consumable and choose Eat to use it immediately.

Players can cook the food to increase their healing abilities if they have more time. All they need to cook is a fire or a cooking pot. To start a fire, use a wood bundle and flint to get the flame going. Next, choose a consumable, select Hold instead of Eat, then return to live mode and drop the items over the fire to roast them quickly.

Players can use a pot if they want to combine ingredients to make them heal even more hearts. Pots are found in most villages and outposts, or players can use a portable Zonai pot. Again, select all the items to be combined and then return to live mode.

Get close to the pot and choose Cook to drop the food in, and it will saute a nice kabob or plate. If players add special ingredients like Monster Parts or certain plants, the meals can have secondary effects, like refilling Stamina, Cold Resistance, or Speed boosting.

Another way to heal in Tears of the Kingdom is by sleeping in a bed. Doing so will also change the time to morning, noon, or night. Beds can be found at any village Inn for 20 Rupees or at the Emergency Shelter for free at Lookout Landing. Then, when players wake up, all their hearts will be filled.

Finally, although risky, players will fully heal when they complete a Shrine Challenge. They also get Light of Blessings; four Light of Blessings can be traded for a Heart Container or Stamina Vessel at unique statues found in the various temples.

How to Heal Cracked Hearts from Gloom

Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Link

Cracked hearts are a new feature in Tears of the Kingdom. The Gloom is a dark magic found in chasms that will crack Link's hearts if exposed to long enough. Cracked hearts cannot be healed using consumables, and as long as players are in the Gloom, they will keep taking damage.

Luckily, cracked hearts will heal if players are on the surface or in the sky. Players stuck in the depths of a chasm can interact with a Lightroot to fix the broken hearts. If players want to plan for Gloom damage, a particular item called a Sundelion will restore cracked hearts when cooked into a meal and eaten. Sundelions mainly grow in the Sky Islands, but they sometimes appear in Hyrule, too.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is available for the Nintendo Switch.
