The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is a direct sequel to 2017's The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, and a few things have changed between the two games. There are new lands to explore, Link gets a few new powers, and even horses get a nifty upgrade.

One thing that has not changed in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is how to lock onto enemies. Targeting enemies, or Focus as it is known in-game, continues to be extremely important in combat once Link has to fend off multiple threats at one time. As it implies, the targeting system allows the player to focus on one enemy and then switch to another target on the fly if necessary. This guide will show players how to lock onto enemies and switch between targets.

How to Lock On Enemies in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom

To lock onto any enemy, move the camera towards the enemy's view and hold the ZL trigger button. The camera will snap at a different angle, and an orange arrow will appear above the enemy's head. The targeting system also works with non-violent NPCs and townsfolk to make it easier to talk to them in case they are walking away or are within a group of other people.

To switch between different targets, players will have to move the camera to another nearby enemy while already targeting one, let go of the ZL trigger, and then hold the same button down for the orange arrow to appear above the new enemy. Players will have to continually hold the ZL trigger to stay locked onto an enemy.

This is the same targeting system as in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, so players who thought it was clunky then will have similar thoughts in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. It is not possible to simply press the trigger and then use the right stick to switch between targets like other games.

The trade-off for this system is that the camera is not rigid while targeting, and players can swing the camera around while targeting to get a better view of the surroundings during combat. One strategy to work around the camera is to quickly take out each enemy before moving on to the next one in a group to not get confused in fast-paced battles.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is now available for the Nintendo Switch.
