A modder has managed to bring The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom’s Ultrand to the classic Ocarina of Time, and with it the ability to craft basic vehicles. Tears of the Kingdom quickly became one of the most successful Zelda entries in recent memory when it launched on the Nintendo Switch last May, and this was partly due to the massive amount of freedom it gave players in interacting with the open world of Hyrule. 2017’s Breath of the Wild already featured this to some extent, but Tears of the Kingdom took it a step further with the addition of Link’s Ultrahand power.

Ultrahand lets Link grab ahold of objects in his environment and weld them together, allowing players to build new weapons, structures, and vehicles to help them navigate the world of Tears of the Kingdom and save Hyrule from the evil Ganondorf. In the many months since the game’s release, fans have been sharing creations of varying complexity online, ranging from surprisingly speedy Tears of the Kingdom-made pickup trucks to powerful, remote-operated battle tanks. Tears of the Kingdom’s creation options help it stand out from the rest of the long-running Zelda franchise, and some players have wondered what it would be like to use them in an older installment.

Why The Next Zelda Should Bite The Bullet That Tears of the Kingdom Dodged

Tears of the Kingdom danced with the motif of having a much darker story, but the next Zelda game could go in this direction wholeheartedly.

A talented modder and YouTuber by the handle of notChase recently answered this question in a creative video that features Tears of the Kingdom’s Ultrahand ability in Ocarina of Time. Just like he would in his later adventure, Link uses this power to pick up stray wagon wheels and attach them to a large wooden platform to make a crude vehicle to carry him across Hyrule. It also works on NPCs, as shown when Link uses Ultrahand to move the Kokiri leader Mido onto the makeshift wagon for a journey through windy deserts and fiery volcanoes.

Ocarina of Time Mod Brings Tears of the Kingdom’s Item Crafting to the Past

While it may not feature the ability to craft vehicles like Tears of the Kingdom, Ocarina of Time is still considered by many players to be one of the best games in the Legend of Zelda series - if not one of the greatest video games of all time. It introduced many elements that later entries like Tears of the Kingdom would enhance, and fans still pay tribute to the 1998 Nintendo 64 classic by creating impressive Ocarina of Time remake videos using Unreal Engine 5.

The latest Legend of Zelda video from notChase takes things in the opposite direction, bringing the newer Ultrahand mechanic from Tears of the Kingdom into the older framework of Ocarina of Time to demonstrate how it would have looked on the Nintendo 64. The result might not be as elaborate as Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom’s many stunning fan creations, but it still gives Link a chance to craft his own ride through the perils of Hyrule.
