Those attempting to free the Divine Beasts in Breath of the Wild might want to start looking for armor that can resist certain climates. Link cannot safely traverse the Eldin region unless he's wearing fireproof armor or has a Fireproof Elixir. While some may prefer to craft and take an Elixir every six minutes, it's easier to just get the Flamebreaker Set.

The good news about the Flamebreaker armor is that it's easy to find in Breath of the Wild. The bad news is that two out of three parts fetch a pretty rupee. Fortunately, the Flamebreaker Set can be upgraded to make it sturdier against hard-hitting opponents like Fireblight Ganon. Link only needs one piece equipped to walk around Eldin without getting burned.

Flamebreaker Armor

Before heading off to Goron City, players will want to stop by the Foothill Stable southwest of Eldin Tower. There's an NPC named Gaile who sells Fireproof Elixir for 60 Rupees (two for 110; three for 150). If this is Link's first time in Eldin territory, he'll want to pay up. Going near Death Mountain without flame protection will set Link on fire.

At the fork in the road north of Eldin Tower, take a left. Keep going, and it'll eventually lead to the Southern Mine. North of the mine is Goron City and the Shae Mo'Sah Shrine. Before leaving the Southern Mine, look for an NPC wearing a Flamebreaker Helmet. This is Kima, and he's willing to trade a Flamebreaker Armor for x10 Fireproof Lizards.

There are plenty of Fireproof Lizards crawling about the Southern Mine. Press down on the control stick to crouch and slowly approach the lizards. Moving too fast will scare it away. Search near ore deposits and under rocks or jars.

Players can buy x2 Fireproof Lizards from Beedle at South Akkala Stable . However, he only has 2 in his inventory and isn't in any rush to restock them. So, the better choice is to look for them in the Southern Mine.

Give the lizards to Kima, and he'll fork over the Flamebreaker Armor. Unfortunately, the price for the Helmet and the Boots will have to come out of Link's pocket. Leave the Southern Mine and follow the path north to Goron City.

Flamebreaker Helm & Flamebreaker Boots

If, by some chance, players didn't get the Flamebreaker Armor from Kima, it can be bought at the Ripped and Shredded armor shop near the southern entrance to Goron City.

This is the only way to get the Helmet and Boots, so hopefully, players have enough Rupees. If not, try mining for gems from the Southern Mine or even on the cliffs surrounding Goron City.

Rare Ore Deposits (gold-colored) will always drop at least one rare gem. If players have x10 Luminous Stones, they can give them to Ledo in Zora's Domain and receive one Diamond in return. A single Diamond will sell for 500 Rupees.

  • The Flamebreaker Helm costs 2,000 Rupees.
  • The Flamebreaker Boots costs 700 Rupees.
  • For those that didn't get the Armor, the cost for it at Goron City's armor shop is 600 Rupees.

The price - especially for the Helm - can be discouraging, but as long as Link has enough gemstones to sell, he should have plenty of Rupees to spend on the armor.

Upgrading the Flamebreaker Set

loz botw great fairy

There are four Great Fairies in Breath of the Wild. The Flamebreaker Set is one of the many armor pieces they'll upgrade in exchange for materials.

Since the base defense for the Flamebreaker Armor/Helm/Boots isn't very high, it's recommended to upgrade at least one of them before boarding Vah Rudania. The alternative is to fight Fireblight Ganon with active Fireproof Elixir buffs.

These are the following materials needed for upgrading each piece of Flamebreaker armor:

The Flamebreaker Set has a set bonus, which is Flame Guard. As its name indicates, this prevents Link from being immolated, which is a very useful set bonus when fighting Igneo Taluses or Fire Chuchus. It won't protect Link from lava pits, so avoid diving in. However, since immolation can be a frustrating "status effect," having gear that prevents this will give players one less thing to worry about. For the set bonus to work, Link needs to have all pieces equipped, and they need to be at least 2 stars or higher.

If players have difficulty finding Smotherwing Butterflies, they can find them on Death Mountain or along Eldin Canyon. If the butterflies (and other upgrade materials) have been registered to the Compendium, Link can track them with the Sheikah Sensor+.

Beedle will also have them in stock at the East Akkala Stable and Wetland Stable. Moblins can be found just about anywhere, and Hinoxes can be fought at Lake Totori, Phalian Highlands, or Giant's Forest, to name a few locations.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is available for Nintendo Switch.
