Another original cast member is joining the lines of Joker: Folie à Deux. Zazie Beets is in talks to reprise her role as Sophie Dumond in the highly-anticipated sequel to the 2019 film, directed by Todd Phillips and co-written by Scott Silver.

While Joker was initially intended to be a standalone film with no sequels, Warner Bros. confirmed in the past June that a follow-up was in development, with shooting starting around December. Joker: Folie á Deux, which will reportedly be a musical, is slated to arrive in theaters on October 4, 2024. The first Joker movie became a massive hit, grossing $1.074 billion worldwide despite receiving an R rating, and earned numerous accolades, including an Academy Award for Best Actor for Joaquin Phoenix.

Deadline reported on Beetz's potential return, however, it's unclear how her character will fit the story. Beetz starred in the 2019 movie as a cynical single mom and Arthur's neighbor/love interest, with whom he has delusions of having a romance. The confirmed cast for the upcoming sequel includes Phoenix returning to play Arthur Fleck, a.k.a as the emblematic clown prince of crime, and Lady Gaga in an undisclosed role. However, rumors suggest she will play Joker's girlfriend and sidekick, Harley Quinn. While further details remain under wraps, the title provides some information regarding the film's plot: Folie à Deux, also known as shared psychosis, refers to a rare disorder in which symptoms of delusions get transferred from one person to another. Therefore, the forthcoming project could detail the origins of Joker and Harley Quinn's iconic toxic relationship.

Lady Gaga (Joker 2)

In the meantime, Beetz is preparing for the release of the fourth and final season of FX's Atlanta, which debuts on September 15. With its signature mixture of realism, fantasy, social commentary, comedy (and even horror), the series became one of the most exciting and creative shows in the last few years. The Atlanta season 4 trailer, which dropped earlier this month, promises to keep up with the series' unique brand of comedy and provide a hilarious farewell for audiences.

Most recently, Beetz starred alongside Brad Pitt and her Atlanta co-star, Brian Tyree Henry, in the action film Bullet Train. Directed by David Leitch, the movie is an adaptation of Kōtarō Isaka's novel, Maria Beetle. Although Bullet Train received poor reviews, with critics pointing out the director's controversial decision to cast non-Japanese actors, it grossed over $60 million worldwide upon its release on August 4. With a new project under her belt, it's safe to say Beetz is having a busy year.

Joker: Folie à Deux is scheduled to arrive in theaters on October 4, 2024.
