Justice League director Zack Snyder weighed in on what could entice him back to the DC superhero world he created, and it involves his Rebels Moon partners.
Snyder's time at DC is best known for creating the DC Extended Universe, colloquially known as the Snyderverse, which started with 2013’s Man of Steel and included 15 more projects, the last of which is the upcoming Aquaman sequel. While the franchise did see some success, and Snyder would amass a cult following during his time at the helm, plans for a new DCU would be drawn up after James Gunn and Peter Safran took control of DC Studios. This move coincided with a fall in performance of the franchise that made it clear Warner Bros. would likely never restore the Snyderverse.
For his part, Snyder has moved on to potentially bigger things, with the filmmaker teaming with Netflix for his Star Wars-inspired Rebel Moon, a science-fiction epic that the streamer has big plans for. While discussing the project in a recent interview with CulturaOcio, Snyder was asked if he would be willing to pick the Snyderverse back up and continue his creative vision on the DC IP, a proposition that the filmmaker had previously set aside as his focus pivoted away from capes. However, the interviewer added a condition that elicited a more positive response from the filmmaker, who said, “If Netflix owned the rights to the DC characters in my universe, I would absolutely.”
This sentiment is not new and is the center of the ever-swelling Sell The Snyderverse To Netflix DC Initiative that has been going strong on social media since the franchise started to decline and Snyder stepped away from DC. While Snyder has not been a strong proponent of the initiative, as he has been busy since his departure with new projects such as Army of the Dead and his brainchild Rebel Moon, the filmmaker has always seemed quite fond of the expansive plans for his DC story. While the DCU reboot puts a nail in the coffin for a potential Snyder return, having the appropriate licensing given to Netflix would completely rewrite the possibility of fans getting to see the original vision, which could also include the rumored Ayer Cut of Suicide Squad.
Snyder's Snyderverse was profitable, according to a former WB President, and it would be a standout addition to Netflix, which has recently been making some bold moves when fellow streamers are switching up to more conservative streaming content strategies in response to a turbulent market. While the thought is cheery to Snyder's die-hard fans, the reality will probably see Rebel Moon remain a top priority for the filmmaker for many years, especially if the first film is as successful as Netflix hopes. Already nursing a video game and tabletop companion for the franchise, an encouraging launch to premiere film A Child of Fire might spell the final doom for the Snyderverse.
As Snyder looks likely to move further away from comic book movies, the DCU draws closer with no signs of turning back, especially as Aquaman 2's box office debut may be worse than The Marvels, terminating the DCEU on a whimper. How things play out concerning Snyder's DC plans and his new commitments at Netflix remains to be seen.
