Director Zack Snyder has announced a co-op game set within the universe of his upcoming sci-fi action film series Rebel Moon. The 300 and Justice League director announced the game from the Gamescom 2023 stage in Cologne, Germany, after Zack Snyder debuted the first full-length trailer for Rebel Moon.

Snyder’s filmmaking career has thus far been deeply intertwined with a variety of pop subcultures, like comic books, horror, and fantasy. Sometime after the release of 300, based on a graphic novel written and illustrated by comics legend Frank Miller, Snyder signed a contract with gaming giant EA to produce a series of video games. None of the games were ever released and little is known about their development. Still, it's safe to say that Snyder has had an interest in giving game development a shot for quite some time.

It was recently reported that Snyder would be making an appearance on the Gamescom 2023 stage, but little was known about exactly what he would be discussing. The now-announced game was described by Snyder as a co-op RPG set within the Rebel Moon universe where players get to create their own custom rebel. Snyder’s Rebel Moon presents the director with an opportunity to dip back into an entertainment medium that’s so far remained elusive to him. Snyder envisions Rebel Moon as a sprawling multimedia franchise, with the upcoming film – the first of two – being just one possible iteration.

A development studio called Super Evil Megacorp will be creating the game, which will be released exclusively on Netflix’s games streaming service. Super Evil Megacorp’s previous work includes TMNT: Splintered Fate, a co-op beat’em up available in the Apple Arcade store. Other projects include the battleground shooter Catalyst Black and Vainglory, a free-to-play MOBA title.

The films will make up an epic sci-fi space opera, with Rebel Moon billed as a more mature version of Star Wars. In fact, the films began as an idea for a series of Star Wars films. In 2012, soon after George Lucas sold the Star Wars brand to Disney, Snyder pitched Rebel Moon to Disney as the company began exploring what this new era of Star Wars would look like. Disney ultimately passed on the idea, but Snyder held onto it, hoping to one day develop it into an original film. After the success of his 2021 zombie heist film Army of the Dead on Netflix, Snyder’s production company, The Stone Quarry Productions, signed a first-look deal with Netflix, granting the streamer an exclusive first shot at producing anything Snyder’s company wants to make for the duration of the two-year deal, which includes two Rebel Moon films and now a video game.

A Rebel Moon Co-op game is currently in development.
