Zack Snyder will appear at the 2023 Gamescom in order to promote his upcoming Netflix movie Rebel Moon and share a "special announcement" which is possibly related to the epic space opera film. The latest iteration of Gamescom is scheduled to open its doors on August 23 and will run through August 27.

As has become customary for the Cologne, Germany-based trade fair, this year's edition of Gamescom will be immediately preceded by an Opening Night Live event. That show will once again be hosted by Summer Game Fest organizer Geoff Keighley.

Taking to Twitter, Keighley confirmed that Zack Snyder will join him on stage during the event in order to present the Rebel Moon teaser and share a "special announcement." Though the latter will presumably have something to do with the upcoming film, it's possible that the mysterious announcement will be gaming-related. That's not just due to Netflix's choice of a venue for promoting its big-budget movie, but also because Snyder himself already confirmed that Rebel Moon is getting a game adaptation back in March.

While not much is known about the upcoming video game tie-in, Snyder hasn't exactly been tempering expectations for the project. On the contrary, the famous filmmaker said that the Rebel Moon game would have a "ridiculous scale" back when he first confirmed its existence. One previous report suggested that Netflix has been making a AAA game with former Overwatch producer Chacko Sonny since at least 2022, though it's still unclear whether that project and the Rebel Moon tie-in are one and the same. The unannounced title from the streaming giant's LA studio helmed by Sonny is said to be a live service game.

Even should the GamescomRebel Moon announcement end up focusing on the upcoming game tie-in, that title is unlikely to hit the market in the near future; the majority of Netflix's in-house gaming efforts are currently in their infancy, with Snyder himself suggesting that the Rebel Moon game adaptation was still in pre-production around the turn of the year. Given the steadily increasing length of contemporary game development cycles, it is implausible that Netflix will release a first-party AAA title anytime soon.

Between that state of affairs and the fact that Rebel Moon: A Child of Fire is already hitting Netflix on December 22, its game tie-in will likely be too late to capitalize on the blockbuster's initial momentum. However, Zack Snyder's first Rebel Moon movie is just the beginning, with Netflix previously confirming that it already greenlit two sequels.
