Mangaka Naoshi Arakawa posted a teaser on September 13 stating that he is working on a new manga, which will be releasing its first chapters soon. The announcement was made via the mangaka's Twitter, where he revealed few other details beyond a sketch of the main character and the new manga's name, Atwight Game (please note this romanization of the Japanese has not been finalized at this time, and this translation is direct from the katakana name of the manga). The post also announced that there would be a preview of the manga coming next week.Naoshi Arakawa is most famous for his successful manga series Your Lie in April, which ran from 2011 to 2015. It had 11 volumes in the end, and inspired both a 22-episode anime in 2014 and a live-action film in 2016. The anime for Your Lie in April is critically acclaimed and popular among many anime and manga fans, while the manga received praise for its story and characters but some criticism for its actual art.Since Your Lie in April, Arakawa has released a few other manga, too. Sayonara, Football and its sequel Farewell, My Dear Cramer are his most recent works, with the final volume of the latter releasing in 2020. Both manga were also adapted into anime in 2021, with Sayonara, Football becoming a movie and Farewell, My Dear Cramer a series.As for Atwight Game, very little else is known at this time. Even Arakawa's announcement tweet is mysterious and teasing, ending with "次ã¯å¦‚何ãªã‚‹ç‰©èªžã¨ãªã‚‹ã®ã‹!?," or "What story will be next?!" He did not disclose any information in regard to a plot or setting, and the strange name of the manga does not hint at much, either. Interestingly, the name is written in katakana, which is the alphabet typically reserved for foreign words. What exactly "atwight" is meant to mean remains to be seen.
Your Lie in April was a romantic drama, and Sayonara, Football and Farewell, My Dear Cramer were both sports stories. That makes it hard to even guess what Atwight Game will be, though it's safe to say it will likely take place in a normal, realistic world. Arakawa is not known for his fantasy or science fiction writing, but rather for his believable stories with sympathetic characters. Plus, the sketch of the leading male that was released looks very modern and normal.
Atwight Game will be previewed in the 43rd issue of Weekly Shounen Magazine, which will be released on September 21st, 2022. Hopefully from whatever is released that day, we can have a better idea of what to expect from Arakawa's next project. And we might even get a proper translation of the manga's name soon as well.
