Showtime released the first Yellowjackets season 2 trailer, which features Lord of the Rings star Elijah Wood as Citizen Detective Walter. The popular drama series first premiered on Showtime in 2021 to wide critical acclaim and received seven Emmy award nominations in 2022.
Created by Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson, Yellowjackets follows a New Jersey High School soccer team whose plane crashes in the Canadian wilderness during a trip to Seattle. The series jumps back and forth between the past and present, showing how the girls survived in the wild and chronicled their present-day lives as adults.
The Yellowjackets season 2 trailer opens with Lewis' character Nat undergoing hypnosis to unlock traumatic memories. It seems to work because, after a quick series of disturbing images, Nat reveals that she sees "darkness," saying they brought something back with them. As the trailer for Yellowjackets season 2 continues, we see the familiar faces of the survivors as teens and adults. It looks like season 2 will feature the girls surviving during winter, which should only make things harder for their already treacherous situation. Adult Misty holds back tears, telling herself that only "babies cry." As more haunting images flash across the screen, viewers are introduced to Wood's character Walter as he tells Misty, “Kidnapping, cults, death… your friendships are a little more complicated than most."
Yellowjackets features an ensemble cast including Sophie Nélisse, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Sophie Thatcher, and Samantha Hanratty as the teenage versions of the characters, while Melanie Lynskey, Tawny Cypress, Juliette Lewis, and Christina Ricci play their adult counterparts. Season 1 premiered on Showtime in November 2021 and received critical acclaim for its writing and performances. The first season received seven Primetime Emmy Award nominations, including Outstanding Drama Series and lead and supporting acting nominations for Lynskey and Ricci. Yellowjackets has already been renewed for season 3 by Showtime.
While Yellowjackets season 2 plot details have been largely kept under wraps, several cast members have spoken about the new season, suggesting that it may be even more intense than the first season. Whatever the future holds for the series, fans are likely excited for Yellowjackets season 2 to premiere after waiting for over a year.
