Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth (or Yakuza 8) is the follow-up to the acclaimed Yakuza: Like a Dragon, which rebranded and reinvigorated the franchise in every conceivable area. It's not surprising that the upcoming sequel has a lot to live up to. Thankfully, the footage shown thus far has sparked ample curiosity. The clues may be vague, but they do point to interesting ideas regarding plot, gameplay, and character. As such, Infinite Wealth could be one of the most engrossing titles in the coming months.

4 New Locations

The beach in Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth

The most apparent feature in the recent trailer is the tropical location. Protagonist Ichiban Kasuga wakes up naked in what seems to be Hawaii. The layout and wealth of beachgoers are reminiscent of Waikiki. This bustling area is easily comparable to Kamurocho or Yokohama--rife with attractions and tourists. Therein lies the most intriguing prospect.

If the hunch is correct, Infinite Wealth marks the series' first major foray outside of Japan. This opens up a whole new realm of possibilities regarding the narrative, substories, and general interactions. Now, Ichiban can run into weirdos from across the world. At the same time, Hawaii's enduring Japanese presence keeps it from feeling too out-of-place for a Yakuza game. These factors make for an enticing sandbox, one which fans can't wait to explore.

3 Old Faces

Ichiban and Kiryu in Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth

While the previous entry introduced a new group of heroes in Ichiban and his party, it also brought back series mainstays for cameos and supporting roles. Majima, Saejima, and Date were a few prominent examples. Of course, the most significant was Kazuma Kiryu: the primary protagonist of earlier entries. Yakuza 6 supposedly wrapped up his journey, but he's now a co-lead with Ichiban. That may steal some of the new hero's thunder, but it creates an undeniably entertaining dynamic between old and young.

Moreover, players are eager to see how this upcoming title expands Kiryu's tale further. It could possibly herald the reappearance of others in his orbit. Perhaps fans could see Sayama, Akiyama, the Florist, or even Haruka. They'd naturally be curious to see how these characters are doing, as many of them have become integral to Yakuza and its shenanigans. Kiryu's paternal relationship with Haruka is practically the emotional core of the series. Considering someone like him can only remain incognito for so long, his friends and loved ones are bound to find out that he's alive. Using them to strengthen his journey would give the story far more depth and pathos. Plus, it'd be fun to watch them interact with new characters.

2 Multiple Gameplay Types

Combat in Like a Dragon: Gaiden and Yakuza: Like a Dragon

Along with new heroes came new gameplay. Though Yakuza had previously subsisted on beat 'em up antics, the last entry opted for turn-based combat to suit Ichiban's love ofDragon Quest. He and the others took turns attacking during battle, and these attacks stemmed from an engaging job system. These elements are largely why the game was a breath of fresh air, and it's safe to assume the mainline entries would continue with that format.

The tropical island setting could pave the way for deepening those established systems. The party could take new jobs lampooning Hawaiian archetypes, such as hula dancers, surfers, or Polynesian tribesmen. Unfortunately, Kiryu's presence throws a wild card into the mix. The developers can't put an overpowered bruiser like him in the party without severely nerfing him. This has led to speculation on how they could implement such a stalwart fighter.

Some theorize that the game could adopt multiple gameplay styles. Ichiban fights with turn-based combat while Kiryu sticks with a beat 'em up style. This would possibly expand on the mechanics in Like a Dragon Gaiden, another upcoming entry following the latter's exploits after Yakuza 6. With or without this dual-pronged approach, Infinite Wealth has the potential to be the most technically advanced Yakuza game to date.

1 New Activities

Activities in Yakuza 0, Yakuza 3, and Yakuza: Like a Dragon

One element which makes each Yakuza city feel alive is the plethora of pastimes. As with most cities, these sandboxes have several facilities for games and other forms of entertainment. These can be Majong, golf, baseball, arcade cabinets, kart racing, movie theaters, and even karaoke. Not only are these amusing in themselves, but they provide rewards for indulging in them. Ichiban's first adventure made these activities more integral, using them to deepen his bond with his party members. It stands to reason that the series will continue this trend.

This is among the numerous aspects enhanced by the novel setting. The tropical tourist trap has countless pastimes uniquely suited to such a spot. Players could go surfing, ziplining, snorkeling, paddling, or hang-gliding. They may even inject a luau flair into the trademark karaoke. The characters are in one of the most popular vacation destinations in the world. Why not flaunt their "infinite wealth" and have some fun?

Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth is currently scheduled to release in 2024 for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
