Square Enix's recent shareholder meeting had a Xenogears fan ask if it would be possible to see a remaster of the cult classic RPG. In recent years, Square Enix has been putting out plenty of remaster collections. Alongside remasters, there have also been remakes of cult classics such as Star Ocean: The Second Story R and Live A Live. One RPG that hasn't had a remaster or port in a long time, however, is another cult classic, Xenogears. For those unaware, Xenogears is a sci-fi RPG that was first proposed as Final Fantasy 7 before it got retooled into its own thing. It was such a departure from conventional RPGs at that point in time that it didn't sell as well as the aforementioned FF7. Despite that, it was still highly regarded by fans and critics. There's still demand for anything regarding Xenogears, as evident by one Square Enix shareholder.RELATED: Square Enix Game CanceledDuring a recent Square Enix shareholders meeting, shareholders were able to ask Square Enix staff members questions, including Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth producer Yoshinori Kitase and Square Enix president Takashi Kiryu. One question was pointing out the success that the Final Fantasy 1-6 Pixel Remaster series has seen, asking if there are any plans to remaster other past titles, with the shareholder mentioning Xenogears specifically. In no certain terms, the president replies that he is refraining from sharing any information about new games, but states that they are considering various options in the company. He also asks that they look forward to any future announcements.

This answer was very non-definitive, giving no direct answer to the shareholder's question. It wasn't likely the inquiry would have been answered in a shareholder meeting either. Despite that, there is at least some demand for a Xenogears port, with fans hoping that since Square Enix has been doing plenty of remakes and remasters, the cult classic RPG will get its own one day.

While Xenogears wouldn't get a direct sequel, its director, Tetsuya Takahashi, would find success in spiritual successor series Xenosaga and eventually the Xenoblade Chronicles series published by Nintendo. Some hope that if Xenogears were to get a remaster, then the original director and Monolith Soft would be involved in remaking or remastering the game.

Xenogears originally launched on PS1 in 1998.
