In spite of the release of its definitive edition earlier this year, Xenoblade Chronicles is a rather old game now. The original version released on the Wii in 2011 and became a cult-classic for many in the gaming community. The series as a whole has come a long way since the original release of Xenoblade Chronicles, and Adam Howden, voice of the game's protagonist Shulk, discussed the future of the character in a recent interview.
The definitive edition of Xenoblade Chronicles includes an epilogue that wasn't in the original version called "Future Connected." It follows Shulk and Melia on a separate adventure, and the voice actors of each character reprised their roles for the first time in nearly ten years. Howden discussed what it was like to reprise a role so long after the original release in an interview with Nintendo Everything.
Howden has been a part of every other Xenoblade title since Xenoblade Chronicles on the Wii, such as playing The Architect in Xenoblade Chronicles 2 and providing his voice as one of the options for the Male Avatar in Xenoblade Chronicles X. He mentioned how excited and happy he was to return to the character and to see the game get ported to the Switch.
Although, when asked if he would return to the character in future installments, he replied with, "Yes. Absolutely." It's important to note that this is not a guarantee that Shulk will return in any other Xenoblade titles, but the epilogue featured in Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition has the potential to open the door for additional narrative continuations.
Ever since Shulk's inclusion in Super Smash Bros. Wii U and 3DS, the popularity of the series has increased quite a bit. Considering how much success Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition has achieved among the community on Switch, it seems like the possibility of additional epilogues or maybe DLC campaigns could be attainable.
In any case, fans of the game will just have to wait and see if the series continues in that direction. Given Xenoblade Chronicles 2 has next to nothing to do with the previous game, other than having DLC that feature Shulk and Fiora, it seems unlikely any installment will truly continue the first game's story. Though, with the inclusion of Future Connected in Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition, it might not be too far outside the realm of possibility.
