Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition releases on May 29, and fans of the franchise and interested gamers will both flock to play this masterly remade edition of the original JRPG Wii game. While the combat system may be difficult for those not familiar with the game, there is still a way to make the game more difficult for those looking for a challenge.

Fans have been waiting for the remastered Xenoblade Chronicles game since its announcement back in September. While the game’s story and features stay closely aligned with the original version, there have been some new modes that players have access to in the Definitive Edition. One of these new additions is Expert Mode.

Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition starts off at one default difficulty level, but players can change that level to be more challenging for themselves. Expert Mode can be found on the game’s menu, which can be accessed by pressing the “X” button. Once there, a player can use “R3” to turn the mode on or back off throughout the game.

While in Expert Mode, a few things change to make the game more demanding. When players reach new landmarks, they don’t receive experience points for discovering these points like they normally would, and characters can only gain experience from battles and vanquishing enemies. Since a considerable amount of experience can be gained simply by exploring the world, this will make level grinding significantly more difficult. On top of that, players can purposefully handicap themselves in the Expert Mode menu by changing their characters’ levels within the range of experience that they’ve already earned while they’ve been adventuring through the game.

If players returning to the franchise want to try something new, this is the perfect way to test their skills against a higher difficulty. If players need a break from the harder aspects as the story goes on, they also have the option of Casual Mode, which is easier than the normal level of difficulty. With all these options to choose from, players can find a difficulty setting that is right for them and will make for their own optimal experience as they travel across the Bionis and the Mechonis and experience the new additions to this remastered classic.
