Highlights

  • XDefiant lacks earnable weapon skins, disappointing players who want to be rewarded for their feats in-game.
  • Some gamers weren't keen on the idea, believing it would encourage selfish playstyles in XDefiant.
  • The game will live and die through its content and player feedback, so hopefully, Ubisoft can listen to the fans.

Despite a massively successful launch, XDefiant players have found themselves disappointed that the game is missing earnable weapon skins, which come as standard in many of its competitors. XDefiant has pushed itself as a new competitor to the Call of Duty series, but there are still a few things the game needs to have a chance of taking the top spot in the shooter space.

It's early days, but things are looking good for XDefiant. In the wake of its launch, XDefiant broke Ubisoft records by reaching 1 million players in record time. Gamers clearly had a ton of interest in the title, and after a bunch of delays, it was finally available to them. The next big test for Ubisoft will be how it retains players. As a live-service game, XDefiant will live and die by its content, and how it listens to its community.

XDefiant is Getting a Far Cry-Inspired Map

XDefiant is adding a new Far Cry-inspired map, featuring vibrant colors and dynamic environments, further enhancing the gameplay experience.

A thread online started by Redditor Lassie_Maven began the conversation, where players complained that XDefiant suffers massively from a lack of earnable weapon skins. Players can currently get skins for the weapons in XDefiant via the in-game store and through a battle pass system, which rewards playtime rather than individual achievements. However, this player is more specifically speaking about skins rewarded for feats performed in-game, with suggestions in the thread talking about skins for "longshots, headshots, or multikills." This type of thing has been standard in the Call of Duty series for a long time, so it would be a solid idea to help XDefiant keep up with its competitor.

XDefiant Players Want Earnable Weapon Skins

While most in the thread were largely in favor of the idea, not everyone agreed. One gamer made a fair point, claiming, "Please no gameplay altering challenges. It can ruin lobbies," while another pointed out that the challenge unlocks in Call of Duty "make you play selfishly in a game where people already play super selfishly." This is a valid criticism of what could happen if this feature was introduced, and it's up to Ubisoft to decide if that trade-off is worth it for a better sense of progression in XDefiant.

The good news is that Ubisoft seems to doing a good job of taking player criticisms on board for XDefiant. Executive producer Mark Rubin recently confirmed that an XDefiant version of Search and Destroy is on the way, giving players new ways to enjoy the game, as well as a killcam feature, which is pretty standard in FPS games. With Ubisoft listening to player feedback, hopefully, earnable weapon skins can be next on the list of incoming features.
