When the Xbox Series S was first announced, many wondered about Microsoft's decision to release a less-powerful next-generation console alongside the Xbox Series X, especially since Sony is only focused on releasing a single console. It is worth noting that while there are two versions of the PS5, the only main difference is that one is an all-digital system, while the other accommodates discs. However, the same cannot be said with the Xbox Series S and Series X, given that the latter is considered less powerful, although both versions will be able to play the same games.
Now, in an interview with The Verge, Xbox head Phil Spencer revealed that Microsoft itself initially hesitated with the idea of the Xbox Series S. According to Spencer, the Series S "was questioned a number of times internally." Still, Microsoft decided to push through with it despite its reservations. Additionally, the decision to release the $299 Series S was made with the knowledge the Sony will only pursue high-end hardware.
Spencer further explained that they wanted to capture a different player base than those targeted by the Xbox Series X and the PS5. In the interview, Spencer revealed that the decision to push through with the Series S all boiled down to inclusion. The company wanted more people in the launch by removing the high price point barrier, allowing some players to enjoy next-generation Xbox games at a more affordable price point. Spencer continued on by saying that the idea of only doing one console at launch was always there, but Microsoft wanted to grow and "find new customers."
Of course, now that both the Xbox Series S and Series X are out in the market, it appears that Microsoft's decision to release two different next-gen consoles is already paying off. Similar to the PS5, the Series X and Series S are currently sold out worldwide, and the lack of stock is expected to linger for many moths to come. Spencer also revealed that Microsoft started late in manufacturing both Xbox consoles compared to Sony, given that it was waiting for "specific AMD technology in our chip."
Meanwhile, for players who are wondering when stocks of the Xbox Series S and X will be replenished, some retailers have confirmed that both next-gen consoles will be available on Black Friday. According to Walmart, it will offer the Xbox Series X, Series S, and the PS5 on November 25 at 9 PM ET. However it is worth remembering that none of these consoles will be available in-stores, and players will only be able to purchase them online.
