Anonymous sources claim to have more information on the rumored upgraded Xbox One console, stating that the system is 4x more powerful than current Xbox One models.

Earlier today, rumors surfaced of an upgraded Xbox One console, which would be released in 2017, and would be powerful enough to use Oculus Rift. Now more information about that alleged Xbox One console, codenamed "Scorpio," has come to light thanks to anonymous sources.

These sources spoke with online publication Polygon, and claimed that the Xbox Scorpio is 4x as powerful as the current Xbox One models. Not only would this kind of power help the system run the Oculus Rift VR headset efficiently, but it theoretically could also help third party Xbox One games reach higher resolutions and frame rates.

It's said that Microsoft's E3 2016 press conference is going to be used to formally reveal this upgraded Xbox One to the public. Apparently, the device was going to be announced later in the year, but pressure from Sony's upgraded PlayStation 4, also rumored to be in development, convinced Microsoft to make the announcement sooner.

In the meantime, Polygon's sources also had more information to share in regards to the slim Xbox One model that has been rumored for the past few months. As some may recall, an Xbox One controller redesign has been rumored for an E3 reveal, and it appears as though that controller will be bundled with the slim Xbox One.

While all of this information should be taken with a grain of salt for now, it's easy to see how Microsoft releasing a more powerful Xbox One makes sense. After all, the Xbox Scorpio is said to be more powerful than the PS4 upgrade, codenamed Neo, which could help the Xbox brand stay competitive in terms of sales.

Likewise, the impending launch of the Nintendo NX could be spoiled a bit by the new and improved Xbox hardware. If Microsoft is indeed introducing new hardware to the market and giving existing owners compelling reasons to upgrade, it could throw a wrench in Nintendo's plans to redeem itself with a more hardcore-friendly console.

With E3 2016 just a few weeks away, we will learn soon enough if these rumors of upgraded current-gen hardware hold any merit. Evidence continues to stack up in favor of both the Xbox One slim redesign as well as the more powerful Xbox One, so an imminent reveal is looking more and more likely.
