  • Xbox Game Pass adds Octopath Traveler 1 and 2, beloved retro-style RPGs, to its June lineup.
  • Octopath Traveler combines SNES-era graphics, an engaging battle system, and a memorable soundtrack.
  • Fans enjoy Octopath Traveler 2 as continuation of the original, with updates to gameplay loop and quality-of-life additions.

Xbox Game Pass has added Octopath Traveler 1 and 2, two highly rated retro-style RPGs, to the lineup of games available to subscribers: Microsoft usually lets gamers know well in advance what titles they can expect to see added to the subscription service, but June was looking pretty sparse a few days into the month. Microsoft finally revealed more of the games coming to Xbox Game Pass in the first half of June, and two of them are now available to download.

Octopath Traveler is an award-winning RPG developed by Square Enix and Acquire. It originally launched on Nintendo Switch in 2018 and has since been ported to PC, Xbox One, PS4, and PS5. The game was extremely well received, with gamers praising its pleasing retro “HD-2D” graphics that combine SNES-era character sprites with high-def backgrounds. Thanks to its innovative battle system, engaging progression system, and memorable soundtrack, Octopath Traveler became a favorite for many gamers, retro and RPG fans alike.

The Best RPGs On Xbox Game Pass (June 2024)

Xbox Game Pass has many fantastic titles from varying genres, and here is a look at the best RPGs the service has to offer.

For its part, Octopath Traveler 2 also received predominantly positive reviews and felt more like a continuation of the first game rather than a true sequel. It introduced a few updates to the gameplay loop, such as a day and night cycle, as well as some quality-of-life changes but otherwise remained very similar to its predecessor. This seems to have been what fans wanted, and Octopath Traveler 2 rose to the top of retail sales charts when it launched in 2023.

And for those who prefer to “own” their games, the addition of the Octopaths to Xbox Game Pass coincided with the launch of a special twofer bundle that includes both titles for a discounted price.

Game Pass subscribers have plenty of other games to look forward to in June as well. Firework and Rolling Hills: Make Sushi, Make Friends were just added to the subscription service on June 4, and there is still more to come. Striking Distance Studios’ 2022 sci-fi space horror experience The Callisto Protocol will be joining Game Pass on June 13, followed a few days later by The Chinese Room’s Still Wakes the Deep, a first-person narrative game that takes place on an isolated oil rig with an unknown foe stalking the decks. Combined with Firework, June is shaping up to be a candy-store month for horror fans who subscribe to Xbox Game Pass.
