Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto 5, one of the highest-rated video games ever made, has been added to the Xbox Game Pass lineup as a surprise new addition to the subscription service. While Xbox Game Pass subscribers knew that there would be new Game Pass games added today, they had no clue that the award-winning and record-breaking Grand Theft Auto 5 would be part of it.

While Xbox Game Pass subscribers didn't know if Grand Theft Auto 5 was going to be added to the Game Pass lineup, they still knew to expect at least one new game today. As previously announced, Sword and Fairy: Together Forever is now part of the Game Pass lineup. Sword and Fairy: Together Forever is an RPG that is especially popular in China, and Game Pass subscribers curious about the series can play it through the consoles, cloud, and PC.

Grand Theft Auto 5, meanwhile, is only available to play through the consoles and the cloud, with the PC version not a part of the game's big Xbox Game Pass return. As some may recall, this is not the first time that Grand Theft Auto 5 has been a part of the Xbox Game Pass lineup. Typically, Xbox Game Pass additions remain on the service for at least a year, but Game Pass subscribers should not expect GTA 5 to be available for nearly that long.

Unless something's different this time around, Grand Theft Auto 5 will likely remain on the Xbox Game Pass service for three to six months at most. Typically, Rockstar Games titles only stay on services like Game Pass or PS Plus Extra for a very limited time, which makes sense as they are some of the most persistently popular games in existence. A removal date has not been announced for Grand Theft Auto 5, but fans can expect to get about two weeks advanced notice whenever it's close to getting the boot.

Even though Grand Theft Auto 5 won't be on Game Pass for as long as other games, there should still be plenty of time for subscribers to get their fill of the open world crime game. Grand Theft Auto 5's story can be completed in about 30 hours or so, and while 100% completion will take a lot longer, it's still reasonable that one can complete it while it's on Game Pass.
