Highlights

  • Xbox Game Pass has added Journey to the Savage Planet and Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl 2 on July 3.
  • Journey to the Savage Planet is a particularly interesting addition on account of being the first and only game that was ever internally published by Google during its short-lived Stadia content push.
  • At least six more titles will hit Xbox Game Pass by July 16.

Xbox Game Pass members can play Journey to the Savage Planet and Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl 2 as part of their subscription starting today. These are the first two titles to reach Xbox Game Pass in July 2024.

Microsoft's popular subscription service added 84 games in the first half of the year, averaging exactly 14 new releases per month. The company is looking to maintain that momentum in July, having already announced eight games that will be coming to Xbox Game Pass in the first half of the month.

While Nickelodeon's 2023 fighting game needs no special introductions, Journey to the Savage Planet may not boast as much brand recognition. But this humorous sci-fi action adventure is no less worthy of attention, with both of the July 3 additions to Xbox Game Pass boasting "Very Positive" player reviews on Steam and comparable critical scores. Journey to the Savage Planet also happens to be the first and last title from Typhoon Studios, a Canadian developer that was shuttered following the closure of the Google Stadia Games and Entertainment division in 2021.

In an interview with Game ZXC, former Typhoon Creative Director Alex Hutchinson revealed that Google closed the studio on the day they shipped Journey to the Savage Planet. The project hence ended up being the first and only game internally published by the internet giant due to the company's pivot to a different content strategy following the global pandemic, which eventually led it to shuttering the entirety of the Stadia cloud gaming initiative in early 2023. Fortunately for gamers, Journey to the Savage Planet lives on thanks to a publishing deal with Digital Bros subsidiary 505 Games, which was signed a year ahead of the studio's 2019 Google acquisition.

Half a dozen more titles are set to reach Microsoft's subscription service in the coming weeks, starting with the July 9 arrivals of Cricket 24 and The Case of the Golden Idol. Xbox Game Pass will also lose five titles on July 15.
