Microsoft's popular subscription service, Xbox Game Pass, offers players a constantly-revolving selection of great games, from action-packed racing titles to somber indie releases. But to accommodate the range of Day One titles and new additions to the library, some games sadly have to be removed. Players usually get around a year to enjoy a title on the service, but by the middle of June, Xbox Game Pass will be losing a handful of games, including Spiders' action RPG GreedFall.

GreedFall was a 2019 release, with PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S versions launching last year. Spiders and publisher Focus Home Interactive's fantasy and historically-focused title was well-received, with GreedFall's message-driven narrative, artistic design, and unique setting singled out as some of the game's best features. If players haven't yet managed to play GreedFall, they still have a little time to get their hands on it, especially before the sequel launches.

An Underrated Action RPG

GreedFall takes place in an early 17th century-styled setting, with plenty of fantasy elements thrown in to accompany the more historical aspects. The game takes a lot of the classic, old-school RPG tropes, and crafts an intriguing world for players to explore, filled with monsters, magic, and mysteries to solve. GreedFall puts exploration front and center as players navigate the new world of the remote Teer Fradee. The island is filled with malevolent supernatural beings and forces, and players need to uncover the secrets at the core of the region to stop the spread of the malichor plague.

Players join other explorers, treasure hunters, and mercenaries that are looking to call the remote island home as they attempt to settle Teer Fradee and fight off the supernatural creatures that are aiding the native islanders. Gamer choices can influence how the story unfolds, with players able to choose how violent or diplomatic they want to be, as well as which of the different factions they align themselves with and who they might want to romance. Players will have a direct hand in shaping the fate of the island and its warring inhabitants as they learn more about the mysterious powers behind the malichor and the history of Teer Fradee.

Why Players Should Check Out GreedFall

With developer Spiders recently announcing a GreedFall sequel, this is the perfect time for players to experience the first game. GreedFall 2: The Dying World will be a prequel set a few years before the events of GreedFall, and it will definitely help any gamers wanting to check out the upcoming game to have a sense of the story and the world. RPGs set in this time period are fairly few and far between, and GreedFall gives gamers the chance to experience this tumultuous time in history while elevating it with compelling fantasy elements. GreedFall also explores the morality of conquest and colonialism in interesting ways while still giving players plenty of choices to direct the story.

The game offers gamers freedom in so many aspects of the gameplay, from character creation to skill progression, alongside the opportunities to shape the narrative. Players can make the world of Teer Fradee their own, helping out certain factions or taking on others through a series of allegiances and diplomacy. The themes that GreedFall tackles are handled well, and it's also just a fun game to play alongside its more message-driven plot. The survivalist elements of forging a new community in its fairly accurate historical setting make for a great dynamic, and GreedFall's multiple approaches to gameplay give players more than one way to get missions done.

GreedFall may not be a perfect game, but the developer strove to create a magical and interesting world that players will want to engage with, and it very much succeeded in this endeavor. Its current accessibility on Xbox Game Pass definitely makes giving GreedFall a shot worth it, and it's a game that players shouldn't sleep on.

GreedFall is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
