Highlights

  • Control Ultimate Edition arrives on Xbox Game Pass, offering graphical upgrades and two expansions for subscribers to enjoy.
  • Players on Xbox Series X can choose between ray tracing at 30FPS or no ray tracing at 60FPS, while Xbox Series S offers 1080p at 60FPS.

Remedy’s award-winning action-adventure game Control is making a return to Xbox Game Pass, but this time it will be the Ultimate Edition that subscribers get to enjoy. The game first launched in August 2019, and within a few months of release, its developer reiterated that Control would not be coming to Xbox Game Pass. However, it did eventually make an appearance on Microsoft’s subscription service, which contributed to Control hitting the milestone of 10 million player within two years.

The games offered on Xbox Game Pass regularly leave the service and are replaced with new titles. This results in a rotating library of hundreds of games of varying genres, but also unfortunately means that sometimes titles are removed that subscribers would like to still have access to. In February 2022, Control was removed from Xbox Game Pass.

The Best Games On Xbox Game Pass (June 2024)

Xbox Game Pass is unquestionably worth the subscription fee, but which of the available games are the best use of your hard drive space?

Now, Control Ultimate Edition has been added to the catalog of games available through Xbox Game Pass. It’s worth noting that there are two versions of the Ultimate Edition, one which specifies that it is for Xbox Series X/S. The other version is playable on Xbox One, though without the current-gen graphics upgrades. The regular, non-ultimate version of Control has also been re-added to Xbox Game Pass and is playable on both generations of Xbox consoles.

What's Included in the Control Ultimate Edition?

  • Season Pass
  • Two DLC: The Foundation and AWE
  • Graphical Upgrades
    • Xbox Series X
      • Quality mode: 1440p at 30FPS with ray tracing on
      • Performance mode: 1440p at 60FPS with ray tracing off
      • Upscaled to 4K in both Quality and Performance modes
    • Xbox Series S
      • 900p at 60FPS without ray tracing
      • Upscaled to 1080p

Control Ultimate Edition offers primarily graphical upgrades, with 4K upscaling from 1440p on Xbox Series X and the ability to choose between ray tracing at 30FPS or no ray tracing at 60FPS. On Xbox Series S, the graphics are upscaled to 1080p and the game runs at 60FPS but offers no ray tracing.

The Ultimate Edition also comes with the season pass, which includes Control's two DLC releases: The Foundation and AWE. Both of these expansions occur after the events of the main game, with The Foundation taking protagonist Jesse Faden to a location far below the Oldest House. AWE introduces Jesse to the Investigations Sector of the Oldest House, where she explores various Altered World Events. This expansion also builds on the link between Control and Remedy’s Alan Wake.

This won’t be the last time that Xbox Game Pass provides a nice upgrade for a game available on the service. The Last Case of Benedict Fox launched on the subscription service on day one, and on March 26, Xbox Game Pass subscribers will be getting a free upgrade to the game's definitive edition. This updated version of the Metroidvania will add new quests, puzzles, and story content, as well as overhauled combat and improved animations. People who already purchased the game will also get the definitive edition upgrade for free.
