Highlights

  • Insomniac Games has a history of creating original and unique superhero costumes in its Marvel games, such as the iconic white spider design for Marvel's Spider-Man's Advanced Suit.
  • The upcoming X-Men game from Insomniac Games can be expected to feature original designs for both the X-Men heroes and their iconic villains, providing fun design opportunities for the studio.
  • Fans can expect to see familiar elements, such as the classic yellow and blue color scheme, incorporated into the new designs, but there will also likely be some special touches that make the suits look like Insomniac origins.

Of all the big reveals that came from Insomniac Games’ massive 2023 leak, the studio’s X-Men game was arguably the most exciting surprise. While Venom’s spin-off is promising thanks to its planned usage of Carnage, Tony Todd’s performance, and the presence of other Spider-Heroes, and it is nice to know that Ratchet and Clank will eventually continue, Marvel’s Mutant race is filled with popular characters. Who Insomniac Games chooses for its X-Men team is anyone’s guess, but they will all likely have some kind of twist on their design no matter what.

Modern Marvel games putting their own touches on classic costumes is a common occurrence, as everything from Marvel’s Avengers to Marvel’s Midnight Suns has offered some fresh takes on classic comic book characters' traditional attire. However, few original superhero outfits are as talked about as those from Insomniac Games, and it makes sense that the developer would want to continue this pattern with its upcoming X-Men project.

Insomniac’s History of Original Marvel Costumes Continues to Grow

Insomniac Games kicked its original designs off with a bang in the original Marvel’s Spider-Man, as it offered an original take on Peter Parker that took the internet by storm. While many initially balked at the white spider, it has since become iconic, with the only criticisms of the Advanced suit being its orangish-red color and odd head shape - two issues Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 corrected with the 2.0 version. While Miles Morales’ costume in his spin-off game was very similar to his traditional comic outfit, it got some nice touches in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. And though his Evolved Suit has been heavily divisive, the “Miles Morales original” is undoubtedly a bold design.

Unique alternate costumes are also seen in the Marvel’s Spider-Man franchise. Though there are plenty of movie outfits and comic book designs that are perfectly recreated, there are also never-before-seen looks like the Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 deluxe edition outfits and the Bodega Cat costume from Miles Morales. Beyond just designs for the friendly neighborhood heroes, Insomniac has put its own twist on the webslingers’ villains, with its takes on Tinkerer, Black Cat, and Tombstone all being unique. Even Venom stands out a bit from certain iterations of the character, as he is truly massive, with the white symbol on his chest having an interesting jagged design. Insomniac even featured its own take on Agent Venom, as well as three original Symbiote looks for Peter, so the studio clearly enjoys doing its own thing with costumes.

A recent Marvel’s Wolverine leak not only confirmed that the yellow and blue and yellow and brown costumes would be coming to the game, but also highlighted an original suit from Insomniac, which will likely become Logan’s “main” attire in-universe. More costumes could be added in the final game, such as Logan's X-Force design, but the early outfits are promising.

The X-Men Provide Plenty of Fun Design Opportunities

If Logan, Peter, Miles, and possibly Silk are all set to get unique outfits that fans can instantly recognize as being made by Insomniac Games, it stands to reason that the X-Men and their villains will get the same treatment. Regardless of whether Insomniac goes for the most recognizable characters like Rogue, Cyclops, and Beast or leans into deep cuts like Magik, Dazzler, and Jubilee, the studio is likely to have some fun coming up with entirely new designs for them. As long as the classic yellow and blue is present on their suits, and the key motifs still exist, fans will surely be open to seeing what Insomniac could come up with. The same goes for whatever villains are used, as it would surely be fun to see some fresh takes on Magneto, Apocalypse, and more of the superhero group's greatest foes. Hopefully, Insomniac is able to create new designs as popular and recognizable as Peter Parker’s Advanced Suit.
