X-Men '97 is a great Disney+ animated show that has done a brilliant job of introducing Marvel's mutant team to a new generation. However, this show is not a new take on the fictional superhero team. In fact, X-Men '97 is a continuation of the X-Men Animated Series that aired for five series between 1992 and 1997. Therefore, this show acts as season six of the X-Men show from the 90s, while also being season one of a new series.

The positive response to Marvel's animated series X-Men 97 heralds good things for the future of Marvel cartoons.

With that in mind, X-Men '97 does a great job of bringing the previously adapted versions of Cyclops, Wolverine, and Magneto back to the screen while also introducing some new characters. However, there are still some important mutants and other X-Men characters who are missing from the show.

7 Havok

Scott Summer's Younger Mutant Brother

X-Men Animated Series Havok
  • Last Seen: Season 3, Episode 16: Orphan's End

Season one of X-Men '97 expertly explored the relationship between Cyclops/Scott Summers and Jean Grey. The pair even expanded their family with the arrival of Cable/Nathan Summers. Unfortunately, a few twists and turns in the series mean that this family cannot stay together, but things look promising for the characters after the end of the season.

Despite this exploration of Scott's new role as a father, no one else from the Summers family makes an appearance. This is especially strange seeing how Havok/Alex Summers appeared in several episodes of the animated series before. His relationship with his brother, Cyclops, and similar powers was explored in season 3 of the show, so let's hope he gets another nod in the future even if it is just a flashback.

6 Thor

This Powerful Avenger Was Strangely Absent

Thor Animated

The character of Thor is not one that normally has links with the X-Men in the Marvel universe. He is a demi-god from Asgard, with super strength and the ability to manipulate lightning, and he is a big part of The Avengers. However, it is his links with that team that make the character's absence in X-Men '97 a bit strange.

X-Men 97: 6 Other Animated Shows That Need Revivals

X-Men 97 has made big waves after reviving the iconic '90s animated show. This list covers other great animated shows that need the same treatment.

One of the things that X-Men '97 does very well is showcase many of the superheroes that exist in this same universe. Some notable characters that appear are Iron Man and Captain America, and Morph even turns into The Hulk at one point. With so many of the main Avengers characters making cameos in the series, it seems odd that Thor or even Asgard doesn't receive as much as a name-drop. Perhaps the writers are saving Thor for something later, or will just continue to avoid using one of Marvel's most recognizable heroes.

5 Colossus

The Mutant With Extreme Muscle Power

X-Men Animated Series Colossus
  • Last Seen: Season 2, Episode 4: Red Dawn

Colossus is a Russian mutant who originally debuted on the team in Giant-Sized X-Men #1 alongside other big heroes like Storm, Nightcrawler, and Wolverine. However, he has had much less exposure. He was hardly included in the first live-action X-Men trilogy, and his first appearance in the animated series saw him being attacked by the X-Men after they mistook him for Juggernaut.

The character does get more time to shine in season 2 in the episode Red Dawn, where the character is dispatched to Russia to help disarm a super-weapon, but that was the last time the mutant was seen. Surely, with the rise of his popularity thanks to his appearances in the Deadpool movies, Colossus will be used at some point again in X-Men '97.

4 Mystique

The Shapeshifter Who Has Kids Present In X-Men '97

X-Men Animated Series Mystique
  • Last Seen: Season 5, Episode 6: Bloodlines

For many fans of The X-Men, their first exposure to the character of Mystique was in the first X-Men movie from 2000. The shape-shifting mutant is normally portrayed as a minion of Magneto, so she was picked to play this role in the movie. As such, she became greatly associated with the franchise and showed up in almost every movie in the series.

However, Mystique has a much deeper past in the comics. She is the mother to two X-Men, Nightcrawler and Rogue, a plot point that was explored in the final season of the original show. With Rogue and Nightcrawler both having a big role to play in X-Men '97, it shouldn't be too long until fans see Mystique again.

3 Juggernaut

An Unstoppable Villain Who Works For Magneto

X-Men Animated Series Juggernaught
  • Last Seen: Season 3, Episode 17: The Juggernaut Returns

Contrary to popular belief, Juggernaut is not a mutant in the X-Men comics. This character is the step-brother of Professor Charles Xavier, and he gets his powers of being an unstoppable force from the Stone of Cykorrak. It is the loss of this stone and his tragic past that is explored in the character's final appearance in the initial run of the X-Men series.

With this explored, it would seem like there are no stories left to tell about Juggernaut in X-Men '97. However, it is always fun to see the character, even if he is just used as another minion working for Magneto.

2 Onslaught

A Version Of The Character Has Already Been Set Up

onslaught villain from marvel

Onslaught is a strange villain in the X-Men comics. This powerful mutant is brought about when Xavier and Magneto merge their consciousness to become one being, similar to what happened in the season finale of X-Men '97. In fact, many fans expected Onslaught to appear in some form when this moment happened.

Unfortunately, the two mutants remain separate and Onslaught has yet to make a full appearance in the series. However, this moment in the finale could always be used as a set-up if the writers ever wanted to explore this character in a future season of X-Men '97.

1 Deadpool

The Merc With The Mouth

X-Men Animated Series Deadpool
  • Last Seen: Season 3, Episode 4: The Phoenix Saga Part 2: Dark Shroud

When X-Men The Animated Series first debuted, Deadpool was a fairly new character in the comics. His initial appearance was in 1991, and this version of the mutant was a simple weapons expert with the powers of regeneration. As such, he only made a few, fleeting appearances in the original show as more of a background player. However, Deadpool would slowly evolve into the fourth-wall-breaking, comedic anti-hero we know and love today.

It was this out-of-the-box version of Deadpool that drew the attention of Ryan Reynolds, and he has successfully played the character in multiple movies, which have broken all sorts of box office records for R-rated films. As a result, Deadpool has become one of the most popular mutants, making his absence in X-Men '97 all the more surprising. Deadpool is a cameo king, so he is sure to be popping up in the series at some point going forward now that the show has been established.
