SPOILERS AHEAD for the WWE 2K24 MyRise 'Undisputed' Storyline

The Men's Undisputed storyline in WWE 2K24 does a great job of drawing very loose connections to the real world, making the storytelling all the more believable. In it, players become the new Undisputed WWE Universal champion after Roman Reigns vacates the title and departs for Hollywood. Of course, this means players live in the shadow of Roman Reigns throughout the entire mode, and the title reign is definitely disputed by naysayers, like The Miz. This is a strong throughline for every major storyline in the mode, but one of its best storylines has less to do with Reigns, the title, or the player character.

At one point, WWE 2K24 pits the champion (the player) against the ring General Gunther, and it feels every bit as intimidating as Gunther is in the real world. The game captures his aura perfectly, the very same aura that had Rhea Ripley telling Dom to be careful with him on a recent episode of Raw. Notably, though, the challenge is not for the Intercontinental Heavyweight Championship that Gunther has defined, but the player's own Undisputed WWE Universal title. WWE 2K24 puts Gunther right into the world title scene with this storyline, and it's something that many fans are eagerly awaiting the real-world WWE to do, too.

The Undisputed WWE Universal Champion Challenges Gunther

Gunther during his entrance in WWE 2K24

As a sign of respect, the player character/Undisputed champion will challenge Gunther. This is a little backward for how a title challenge usually works, but it makes sense. The game acknowledges Gunther as one of the more dominant stars on the roster, as he is in the real world. The player can then pursue some of the side quests in WWE 2K24 before moving into the story gate, but what's noticeable is that it ties into Gunther there too. These are usually more randomized, but if players take a match in TBD, a member of Imperium will attack them there. Once players start the story gate, Gunther still looks down on the champion, pitting the player against Imperium instead of himself. Gunther is supposed to first face the player in one of WWE 2K24's gauntlet matches, but instead it's Ludwig Kaiser, Giovanni Vinci, and Ilja Dragunov. Eventually, when it's all said and done, the player retains their championship.

It's a fictional storyline and wouldn't obviously translate to the real world, but it lets players live out a current booking fantasy (even if the players eventually win instead of Gunther). It's clear that Gunther deserves to be in the main title picture, but it's worth noting that right now may not be the best time. The world title picture is currently packed with Roman Reigns, The Rock, The Bloodline as a whole, and Cody Rhodes, while Seth Rollins faces Drew McIntyre at WrestleMania. Gunther is set to defend the Intercontinental Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania, as well. It's uncertain where WWE Creative takes him post-WrestleMania, but it might be a good time to pull the trigger then.

If Drew defeats Seth, then there truly needs to be a feud between Drew and CM Punk before he loses the belt. However, Gunther winning the Royal Rumble and taking the WHC at the next WrestleMania, if not sooner, would be a great direction for his character. That's whether he vacates the Intercontinental championship undefeated, eventually loses, or sets his eyes on becoming a double champ; ultimately, what's clear is the next stop for Gunther after the IC title is the world title scene. WWE 2K24 MyRise does as much, and real-world WWE needs to as well.
