WWE 2K22 has added lots of new mechanics in this year's release, which extends to reversals and counterattacks. The game has added ways to interrupt an opponent's combination attacks and standing grapples on the feet.

The mechanics are somewhat arcadey in their execution as it requires some quick thinking and a little bit of luck for the attack interruptions and counters to work. Where reversals still require timing and skill, these new counters rely on a bit of luck and some educated guesswork from the player.

These new mechanics in WWE 2K22 can lead to some frustration and this is never more evident in the ground attacks. Without knowing what to do, one can find themselves stuck in an endless loop of attacks on the ground that don't trigger the reversal buttons.

Moreover, this seems to be a major strategy for many online gamers, leading to frustration for those on the receiving end of it. Thankfully, there is a way to counter and reverse the ground attacks in WWE 2K22 and give oneself a fighting chance to make a comeback in the match.

How To Reverse Ground Attacks

WWE 2K22 has added a way to interrupt and counter-attack opponents, and it works in addition to the reversals. There is an element of guessing when it comes to successfully implementing these moves, but predicting what moves an opponent will use next is a strategic way to mount a comeback.

The moves on the feet are explained well in WWE 2K22's tutorial but it's not explained well for the certain ground moves. Here's how to execute all counterattacks for ground attacks:

WWE 2K22 Austin countering a low attack body attack
  • Light and strong attacks are initiated by pressing X/Square or A/X.
WWE 2K22 Flair missing the running elbow
  • Grounded running attacks can be reversed by pressing theY/Triangle button at the right time.
  • Ground submission moves in WWE 2K22 can be reversed by pressing the Y/Triangle button at the right time.
WWE 2K22 The Rock countering the austin's grab attempt
  • Grounded attacks are initiated by the grab/B/Square button. This is the most difficult attack to counter on the ground as the reversal prompt doesn't appear. The opponent will perform the grab move and then attack by pressing X/Square for a light grapple, A/X for a strong grapple, or B/Circle for a medium grapple. To counter it, the player needs to predict the attack by pressing the corresponding button. So if the opponent is attacking with the X move and the player is rapidly pressing X, this will automatically counter the move without the need for timing. It sounds random, but the AI and the players online usually follow patterns that can become easy to predict.
  • If the opponent holds on to the player's wrestler for too long to initiate the dragging mechanic in WWE 2K22, it will trigger an automatic counter.
WWE 2K22 Bret Using Quick Escape Counterattack
  • Ground escape attacks are preemptive counterattacks that can only be triggered if the player has at least one blue bar filled in the signature meter. The counterattack will only work if the opponent stands close to the player's downed wrestler. This can result in a kick to the opponent's head or a roll-up for the pin.

WWE 2K22 is available for the PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S
