WWE 2K22 is coming soon to PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium subscription tiers, but the wrestling game has a catch that subscribers should know about before redeeming it. The December 2022 PS Plus Extra and Premium lineup of games will be available starting December 20, and WWE 2K22 will be added to the service on January 3, 2023.

WWE and 2K's latest wrestling game features a redesigned gameplay engine, refined controls, and a vast roster of current and past superstars. Further, the release of WWE 2K22 marked the series debut on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S this past March. Next-gen versions of WWE 2K22 are more expensive than the base $59.99 list price for the PS4 and Xbox One versions, however. If desired, customers may opt for the WWE 2K22 Cross-Gen Bundle for $79.99, which includes digital copies of the game for PS4 and PS5 or Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S respectively. The upcoming PS Plus Extra addition of WWE 2K22 raises some questions for players interested in the PS5 version, and 2K responded to the inquires by Push Square regarding which version of the game will be added soon.

According to a statement from 2K to Push Square, WWE 2K22 for PS Plus Extra subscribers will be the PS4 version. The 2K representative that reached out to provide the statement did not clarify why the PS4 version was chosen, but the representative said that the game is playable on both generations of PlayStation consoles. If a PS Plus Extra or Premium member were to download WWE 2K22 from the service on PS5, the game will be run as the PS4 version via backwards compatibility.

Since WWE 2K22 already has a native PS5 version on the PlayStation Store, the decision surrounding the PS4 version has upset some PS Plus subscribers in the gaming community. 2K's lack of clarification on the matter seems to suggest that the PS4 version alone is adequate for PS5 players as well. Games such as SEGA's Judgment and Yakuza: Like a Dragon will include PS4 and PS5 versions this month for PS Plus, raising even more questions about WWE 2K22's addition to the service.

2K should value the opportunity to bring more players into the WWE 2K22 community with PS Plus, and another statement could bring insight on the situation. Fortunately, PS Plus is not the only way to get into the latest wrestling game, and WWE 2K22 often goes on sale for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.

2K has yet to announce WWE 2K23, but the game will likely be announced in the near future. The success created by WWE 2K22 in the past year has boosted confidence in 2K's ability to release feature-rich and engaging wrestling games. WWE and 2K should continue to please wrestling fans with an even better roster, enhanced gameplay mechanics, and new features in the next game.

WWE 2K22 is available now for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S.
