The comparisons between Wuthering Waves and Genshin Impact are inevitable. The former takes inspiration from many things from the latter, and it’s apparent in almost every detail of the game. So much so, people have already drawn charts to showcase the equivalencies between the two games.

However, that isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Games take inspiration from each other all the time; it’s how mechanics are polished to a sheen. One of the ways Wuthering Waves improves upon Genshin’s Gacha formula is in the Pity system. Many of the mechanics are the same, but small changes make all the difference. Here’s what’s new.

The Pity System Explained

The way the pity system works in Wuthering Waves closely resembles how the Gacha works in Genshin Impact with a few key differences.

  1. Players are guaranteed a 4-star character or weapon on every 10 pulls.
  2. Players are guaranteed a 5-star character or weapon on every 80 pulls.
  3. There is a 50/50 for character banners but not for weapon banners.
  4. Pity carries over from one event banner to the next.

The key difference between Genshin Impact and Wuthering Waves here is that, unlike Genshin, Wuthering Waves guarantees players a 5-star character or weapon at least once every 80 pulls. Once players receive a 4-star or 5-star, the respective pity timer will reset to 0.

However, Pity does not guarantee that players will get the 5-star rate-up character for that banner. Just like Genshin, there will be a 50/50 to decide if players get the 5-star featured in the event banner or if they get a regular 5-star from the standard pool. However, if a player fails the 50/50 once, the next 5-star is guaranteed to be the rate-up 5-star character.

For weapon pulls, Wuthering Waves allows players to lock in a single weapon on the standard banner, and within 80 pulls, that weapon is guaranteed to drop. There is no 50/50 for weapons. Similarly, weapon event banners only feature one weapon, and players are guaranteed to get exactly that weapon in 80 pulls.

Players will get the chance to pick a 5-star weapon of their choice (from the standard banner) after reaching Union level 45.

How Does Pity Carry Over in Wuthering Waves?

Pity progress is separated into four pools:

  • The character standard banner
  • The weapon standard banner
  • The character event banner
  • The weapon event banner

Pity carries over between different event banners, meaning if players pull 70 times on a limited event character banner but don’t get it and the next event starts, they’re guaranteed a 5-star pull from the next 10 pulls.

Players can check Pity progress by clicking the history icon at the bottom of the Convene screen (screenshot above). Calculate how many pulls you’ve done to get a concrete idea of when the next guaranteed 5-star will be.

How Does Pity on the Novice Banner Work?

The Novice Convene Banner has a different Pity system than the Event or Standard banners. On this banner, players will obtain a guaranteed 5-star after only 50 pulls. And the cost of a 10 pull is reduced to x8 Convenes instead of x10. However, once players complete the 50 pulls, the Novice Convene closes permanently, unlocking the Beginner Choice Convene.
