Yuanwu is one of the most misunderstood characters in Wuthering Waves because of the roundabout way his kit works, which makes building a team around him a bit frustrating. To start, Yuanwu serves best as a dedicated sub-DPS/quick swap character who deals damage in quick bursts of 5 to 10 seconds before returning off-field. He enters a buffed state when his Forte Circuit is full and holds down his Resonance skill to break his signature pillar when it's on-field.

In this Lightning Infused state, his attacks gain more range, he learns a new combo with both his basic attacks and special attacks, and most importantly, his damage starts scaling off DEF% instead of ATK. This is crucial because, outside of the Lightning Infused state, Yuanwu is just a run-of-the-mill ATK% scaling character. This is both Yuanwu's strength and weakness at the same time. Strength because it makes him a much easier character to build, and weakness because, since he is almost always going to be built with DEF% stats on his echoes, he will only deal real damage while in his Lightning Infused state.

Another big upside to Yuanwu is that his skills and attacks deal direct Toughness/Vibration damage, draining the target's poise bar. This makes him a boss killer, especially useful in the Tower of Adversity. Here are some of the best team compositions that take advantage of his kit.

Mortefi is an excellent sub-DPS in Wuthering Waves that likes to stay off-field while buffing his allies.

1 Yuanwu + Lingyang + Baizhi

Yuanwu + Lingyang + Baizhi team composition in wuthering waves

The main reason for pairing Yuanwu with Lingyang, in particular, is because of the way his Liberation works. When used, Yuanwu's Liberation gives interruption immunity to all of his team members for ten seconds. For Lingyang, this is a huge deal because of how his Forte Circuit (Striding Lion) works. Lingyang's entire kit in Wuthering Waves revolves around him being on-field in the Striding Lion State, which lasts for exactly 10 seconds if used after his Liberation. While in this state, Lingyang's damage is increased massively, but he becomes unable to dodge and, if knocked out of the air, loses the Striding Lion state. With Yuanwu's Liberation providing interruption immunity, Lingyang doesn't need to worry about the one weakness of his signature ability.

The ideal rotation for this team is for Yuanwu to put down his pillar, destroy it with a heavy attack to enter his buffed state, and then use his Liberation once it ends. Lingyang swoops in as soon as this happens, with his Forte Circuit charged up, and holds Heavy Attack to become a lion dancer. Baizhi is mainly here to provide healing, and with the Moonlit Clouds set, ER is taken care of. Yuanwu should also be running the Moonlit Clouds set to ensure neither he nor Lingyang has to stay on-field for a long time to charge up their Liberations. This is a quickswap team, with most of the field time split between Lingyang and Yuanwu, with Baizhi only making an occasional appearance.

Yuanwu Team Roles

  • Yuanwu: Sub-DPS
  • Lingyang: DPS
  • Baizhi: Healer

2 Yuanwu + Jiyan + Verina

Yuanwu + Jiyan + Verina team composition in wuthering waves

In this team, Jiyan is the main DPS, and he is meant to stay on-field for the duration of his Liberation (Teal Dragon state). Once his buffed state ends, Yuanwu can swoop in as a sub-DPS and do his complete rotation while Jiyan recovers energy in the background. As the best support in Wuthering Waves, Verina is a welcome addition, providing both Yuanwu and Jiyan the freedom to deal with as much damage as possible without worrying about their health.

While Yuanwu's direct damage as a sub-DPS is quite decent if built correctly, the main reason he shines in this team is because of his ability to deplete enemy Vibration (poise meter) in massive chunks when in his buffed state. Once this meter drops to zero, the enemies fall into a vulnerable state. This is where Jiyan can come in and clean up. This is especially effective against boss enemies with massive health bars who like to fly off like the Mourning Aix. Yuanwu can ground these types of bosses very effectively, making him an asset worth building.
