Highlights

  • WrestleQuest, a turn-based RPG wrestling game, has been delayed due to a technical glitch, pushing its release to August 22.
  • The game stands out among other wrestling-themed releases this year with its retro RPG gameplay and appearances by ring legends.
  • While the delay may disappoint fans, Mega Cat Studios is committed to polishing the game to ensure a high-quality experience for players.

The upcoming wrestling-themed RPG WrestleQuest has been delayed at the last minute. Pro wrestling and video games have always made for a great tag team, and 2023 has seen several major grappling-related releases from multiple squared-circle promotions. WWE 2K23 evolved the wrestling series’ formula with a new WarGames match type and novel Showcase mode centered around John Cena, while AEW Fight Forever served as a throwback to the simpler days of WWF No Mercy.

A third contender in 2023’s growing battle royale of wrestling games was announced last March, this one forgoing the usual 3D simulation style of most grappling titles in favor of a turn-based RPG format more in line with old-school Final Fantasy games. While WWE 2K23 and AEW Fight Forever focused on the current wrestling landscape, WrestleQuest will instead draw on the industry’s past with appearances by ring legends like “Macho Man” Randy Savage and Andre the Giant. These famous faces will help the player as they embark on their own journey to become a champion in their own right using powerful special moves and colorful “tag team” combos.

Unfortunately, fans will have to wait a little while longer to step into the ring with WrestleQuest, as the game has just been delayed on the very day it was set to come out. In a statement to Gematsu, developer Mega Cat Studios revealed that this delay is due to a technical glitch that can cause players to lose their saved progress, and that WrestleQuest will instead launch on August 22 as a result. The studio also made light of this slight setback on Twitter by posting a wrestling-related meme.

This isn’t the first time that WrestleQuest’s release was pushed back, as it was once set to launch in May before being pushed to August due to a new partnership deal causing unforeseen issues. In the meantime, fans have been getting small previews of WrestleQuest in action thanks to gameplay footage of its frantic turn-based combat and special steel cage match stipulations.

WrestleQuest looks like a colorful blend of grappling action and retro RPG gameplay, and a striking contrast to this year’s other major wrestling-themed releases like WWE 2K23 and AEW Fight Forever. While this latest delay might come as a disappointment for shared fans of gaming and pro wrestling, they can take comfort in knowing that Mega Cat Studios is devoted to ensuring that the game is as polished as can be before it steps into the area - even if it has to sit in the locker room for a couple more weeks while the team is ironing out its remaining glitches.

WrestleQuest releases in August 2022, 2023 for Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
