Wrestling and video games have been intrinsically tied together for decades, as the extreme sport has been a popular subject for plenty of video games throughout the years. Wrestling leagues like WWE and the former WCW have been popular staples of each console generation since the NES era, and 2K's popular WWE 2K series continues to create new games for wrestling fans with the release of WWE 2K22 happening earlier this month. Now, Skybound Games and Mega Cat Studios have officially revealed Wrestle Quest, an upcoming RPG that presents the popular sport in a bold new way.

While Skybound and Mega Cat Games may not be the most recognizable names to most gaming fans, the publisher and developer respectively both share a large repertoire of titles. Mega Cat Studios has been churning out multiple indie games each year with many created for older consoles like the NES and Sega Genesis. Skybound Games' parent company, Skybound Entertainment, boasts an impressive library of published TV shows and games, including Amazon's Invincible, popular indie game Before Your Eyes, and even The Walking Dead. Now, the two studios have come together with a unique vision for Wrestle Quest, a turn-based wrestling RPG.

Mega Cat Studios and Skybound Games officially revealed Wrestle Quest on Wednesday with a minute-and-a-half long trailer introducing the journey of young wrestling hopeful Randy "Muchacho Man" Santos, clearly a parody of massively popular wrestling legend Macho Man Randy Savage. The trailer features a variety of original characters the player will meet throughout their journey to become a wrestling superstar, along with showing off the game's combat and unique 'tag team' attacks that different combinations of characters can perform in battle.

Alongside the original characters, Wrestle Quest also features pixelated versions of several of professional wrestling's greatest legends as bosses for the young Randy Santos to overcome during his journey. The trailer features iconic pieces of wrestling history like Andre the Giant, Jake 'the Snake' Roberts, and Macho Man Randy Savage with the game's official website teasing explorable in-game worlds based on the careers of the renowned superstars. No release window was given during the trailer, however interested wrestling fans can sign up to receive more information as it comes through the game's website.

The announcement of Wrestle Quest brings a markedly different spin to a wrestling game genre that has been largely comprised of sports titles throughout its history. The modern world of wrestling games is largely dominated by 2K's licensed WWE games with other non-licensed games presenting a more cartoony, exaggerated version of the sport like RetroMania Wrestling and Epic's recently announced wrestling battle royale Rumbleverse. Wrestle Quest will look to stand out from the pack with its pixelated artstyle and RPG gameplay and carve out its own niche within the world of wrestling.

Wrestle Quest is currently in development for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
