Fans of run-and-gun first-person shooters will be happy to hear 3D Realms has set a date for the release of their homage to Quake. Wrath: Aeon of Ruin will be dropping February 25th, 2021.

3D Realms made Wrath: Aeon of Ruin available as an early access game back in late November, and it has had plenty of new content added since then. The early access update #2 dropped on May 28th, adding a new level, "The Priory." With it comes the Slag Cannon, the Sigil of Flight, and a new enemy called "The Oppressor".

Pre-order for the game's Founders Edition has begun. Players who get their hands on one of the 500 units sold will receive along with a beautiful collectors box and the game on CD, "The Art of Wrath" art book, the original soundtrack by Andrew Hulshult, 5 metal figurines of the game's enemies, stickers, a poster, and a USB stick filled with exclusive content. The Founders Edition is $99.99.

Players take on the role of Outlander, who washes ashore of a bleak landscape dominated by stone and steel structures where strange undead creatures roam. The lightly pixelated textures give the whole game a retro feel with modern game mechanics. Previews of Wrath AoR were promising, too.

Movement is similar to the earlier Quake and Doom games. That's not surprising, since Wrath is based on the Quake engine. Even some of the enemies feel like they were lifted out of Doom, though 3D Realms has clearly put its own spin on things. The Heretic behaves very much like Doom's Cacodemon, launching fireballs at the player's face while flying through the air.

One enemy seen in gameplay footage will spew blue orbs when decapitated, its head spinning on the floor like a top until it explodes. The weaker fallen lurk around every corner, ready to advance on the Outlander as they approach.

In order to defeat these foes, players now have a small arsenal of seven weapons to choose from. They start the game with the Ruination Blade, which could be described as a punch dagger and cuts through enemies similar to Doom's iconic chainsaw. What makes this particular weapon interesting is the ability to lunge forward while striking, which makes players fly forward even when midair, allowing them to clear gaps they wouldn't be able to otherwise. Other weapons include the Fang Spitter, a pneumatic machine gun that shoots teeth.

It's unclear what 3D Realms has in store for the future of Wrath AoR. There is already so much the game has to offer, and the developers have set the bar high for the actual release.

Wrath: Aeon of Ruin is scheduled for release on February 25, 2021.
