Mimiron’s Head is up there with the likes of Invincible as one the most sought-after mounts in World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King Classic. In addition to looking absolutely amazing, this is one of the few mounts in the game that increase flight speed by 310%, as opposed to the usual 280%. The mount has a unique model and unique animations, allowing any player who uses it to easily stand out from the crowd.
Obtaining Mimiron’s Head in Wrath of the Lich King Classic is quite a hassle, similar to the Time-Lost Proto Drake. This mount was designed as a special reward for players capable of overcoming Ulduar’s most difficult challenges. In other words, the mount is (generally speaking) reserved for hardcore raiders.
How To Get Mimiron’s Head
Despite what its name might suggest, Mimiron’s Head doesn’t actually drop from Mimiron. Instead, the popular mount drops from the final boss of Ulduar, Yogg-Saron. Unfortunately, simply killing the boss isn’t enough. To get Yogg-Saron to drop the mount, some very specific conditions need to be met before engaging the boss.
The mount is tied to the Alone in the Darkness achievement, which requires players to defeat Yogg-Saron without the assistance of the four Keepers. Namely, Hodir, Thorim, Freya, and Mimiron. While that may sound like an easy task for the uninitiated, any veteran WoW player will tell you that it’s all but impossible to achieve unless you’re running the raid with a very good party.
To make things even more challenging, only the 25-man version of the raid counts towards the achievement and the mount. As it’s the case with every raid, 25-man Ulduar is significantly more difficult than the 10-man version. On the bright side, Mimiron’s Head has a 100% drop chance, so if you do manage to beat Yogg-Saron without the assistance of the Keepers, you’re guaranteed to get the mount.
Avid mount collectors should also know that Alone in the Darkness counts towards the Glory of the Ulduar Raider (25-player) meta-achievement. Unlocking Glory of the Ulduar Raider automatically awards you with the Ironbound Proto-Drake mount.
Additional Information
It’s pretty easy to botch this achievement if you haven’t done Ulduar before. While making your way through the raid you will eventually have to fight all four Keepers, but it’s very important to remember that the bosses don’t die when they are defeated. Instead, you’re merely freeing them from Yogg-Saron’s influence. Once they are no longer his puppets, they offer to help you kill the Old God.
You’ll run into the Keepers again on your way to Yogg-Saron, and it’s crucial that you don’t talk to them when you do. Speaking to any of the Keepers will cause them to offer you their boon, which automatically makes your party ineligible for the achievement. Without the interference of the Keepers, Yogg-Saron gains the following buffs:
- 40% extra damage
- 20% extra HP
- 20% additional healing
- 20% speed increase
- 20% damage reduction
Meanwhile, your party will also be missing out on one or more of the Keepers’ very powerful abilities. These include:
- Hodir’s Protective Gaze: prevents the death of a player that sustained fatal damage
- Destabilization Matrix: reduces enemy attack speed by 100% and casting speed by 300% for 30 seconds
- Titanic Storm: AoE attack that can destroy weakened immortal creatures
- Sanity Well: regenerates 20% Sanity every two seconds but also reduces damage done by 50%
Important Tip
Ideally, you’ll first want to fight Yogg-Saron a couple of times with the help of all the Keepers just so you can get comfortable with all the mechanics. Once the fight becomes second nature, you can gradually remove the Keepers one by one until you eventually get to a point where you can fight the boss without any assistance. Trying to get Alone in the Darkness on your first or second run will most likely result in failure unless your raid group really knows what it’s doing.
