Warlocks and Hunters are the only two classes in WoW Classic with pets, but unlike Hunters, Warlocks are getting a completely new role to play in the Season of Discovery. With Warlock SoD Runes like Metamorphosis and Demonic Grace, Warlocks can be Tanks in SoD, and they're looking to be one of the best Tanks in the Season in general. But aside from an exciting new spec, Warlock players who just want to DPS are getting lots of strong Runes to try out, too.
RelatedAll nine classes in World of Warcraft Classic got major updates in the Season of Discovery – but which class should you play in SoD?
In Phase One, there were a total 12 SoD Warlock Runes, available for the Chest, Legs, and Gloves slots. In Phase Two, six more Warlock Runes were added for the Boots and Belt slots, making for a total of eighteen across all five. This guide details both the effects and locations of all Warlock SoD Runes added in Phase One and Phase Two.
Updated April 4, 2024 by Erik Petrovich: As players prepare to enter the third phase, and pick up new Runes, Phase 1 SoD Warlock Runes and Phase 2 SoD Warlock Runes aren't going anywhere. Though we don't yet know if there will be an easier way to get the first two phases' Runes in P3, the original methods to get Warlock Runes from SoD hase One and Two should still work. What hasn't remained the same. throughout the numerous WoW SoD patches. are the specific effects of the P1 and P2 SoD Warlock Runes. This guide has been updated to specifically list all Runes available in the first two SoD Phases for Warlocks, and will no longer be updated to include later phases' runes. Additionally, the effects of these Runes have been updated to match their current in-game effects accurately, as of the publish date.
To preserve the sense of mystery intended for the Season of Discovery, each P1/P2 SoD Warlock Rune location is hidden by default. Open the "Click to Reveal" box to show details on how to get all Phase One and Phase Two Warlock Runes in SoD.

All characters must follow a branching questline with multiple requirements and locations involved. To begin with, players must go to the southern Barrens to find an NPC named Doan Karhan.
Pick up his quest, then head to the Zoram Strand and either head into the Blackfathom Deeps raid or look for Twilight Acolytes just outside (in the subterranean tunnels, not the surface). Kill Twilight Acolytes to get
three Soran'ruk Fragments
. Then, head to Shadowfang Keep and kill Shadowfang Darksouls to get the
Large Soran'ruk Fragment
.
Return to Doan Karhan with three Soran'ruk Fragments and one large Fragment to complete the first quest. The next quest asks players to locate the Orb of Des and the Bough of Altek.
The
Orb of Des
is found at the top of the Tower of the Ilgalar, found in the eastern Redridge Mountains. The
Bough of Altek
is found at the top of the Tower of Althalaxx in northeastern Darkshore. Both of these areas are high-level and filled with elites, so bring a group.
Return with both Orbs to Doan Karhan to receive the final part of the quest chain. Players must get
ten Blood of the Legion
to progress, which can be found by defeating various demons in Felfire Canyon in Ashenvale. Don't head back to Doan yet, though – look for an Altar just south of Felfire Canyon (near the memorial to Grommash Hellscream).

All Warlock Belt Runes (PHASE TWO)
Grimoire of Synergy, Shadow and Flame, & Invocation
To get the Grimoire of Synergy Rune, you will need to first complete the lengthy Metamorphosis questline from Phase One. After this, at Level 30, you will be called back to the Warlock Camp in the Barrens. Speak with Raszel Ander to begin the quest A Solid Foundation and receive an Invisibility Potion.
Then, go to the Bough of Shadow in Ashenvale, and use the Invisibility Potion to evade the Emerald Tree Warder elite Level 60 enemies. Look for an interactive tree in the area to get the Bough of Shadows.
After that, return to Raszel Ander, using Shadow Ward to reduce the harmful effects of the Bough. Raszel will give you a quest to get a Soul Vessel, which must be crafted by an Engineer with at least 205 skill. The schematic for this item can be purchased through either factions' Waylaid Supply vendors.
Once you get a Soul Vessel, go to Mannoroc Cavern in south Desolace and look for an Altar. Turn in the quest, and a Level 40 Elite named Des'Altek will spawn. Defeat this elite to get the Rune of Synergy as well as a Neverending Soul Vessel, a 5-minute cooldown item that negates the Soul Shard cost of the next spell cast.
Grimoire of Synergy Effect | - When you or your Demon deals damage to an enemy, there 5% chance to increase Damage dealt by the other by 25% for 15 seconds
- Self-buff, lasts for 30 minutes

RelatedDruids are a versatile class in WoW Classic, and with these Season of Discovery runes, they have more build options than ever before.
To get the Rune of Burning Darkness, which unlocks the Shadow and Flame Rune,
head to Desolace and look for an extinguished Campfire just northwest of the Kodo Graveyard (slightly north of the "D" in "Kodo" on the map). Pick up the quest Highway Robbery, then go directly northwest to find Kormek's Hut on the ridge overlooking the graveyard. Turn in Highway Robbery, pick up the next quest On The Lam, then head to Booty Bay.
In the Inn, talk to Tokal to continue the questline and pick up Cherry For Your Thoughts. Purchase some Cherry Grog from the barkeep and give it to her to continue onto the next part, No Honor Among Thieves.
Go to the border of the Wetlands and the Arathi Highlands and look for a boat underneath the Thandol Span bridge. Jump down into the water and interact with this boat to teleport to the far eastern shore of the Highlands. Talk to Illari Duskfeather, choose either Dialogue option, and kill her to get Illari's Key. Open the nearby Illari's Loot Cache to get the Rune.
Shadow and Flame Effect | - Critical Hits with Fire and Shadow spells increase both your Fire and Shadow damage by 10% for 10 seconds
|
To get the Rune of Invocation, go to Stromgarde Keep in the Arathi Highlands and kill Syndicate Conjurors until you get 10 Conjuror's Pendant items. Get a Soul of the Void by using Drain Soul on a Voidwalker nearby, then combine the Pendants and the Soul to summon a Void Seeker. These items can only be combined on the Void Prism, a special location on the top floor of a house in Stromgarde. Kill the Void Seeker to get the Rune of Invocation.
Invocation Effect | - Refreshing Corruption, Immolate, Curse of Agony, or Siphon Life when it has less than 6 seconds remaining deals instant damage to the target equal to the spell's remaining periodic damage
|
All Warlock Boot Runes (PHASE TWO)
Dance of the Wicked, Shadowflame, & Demonic Knowledge
To get the Rune of Wickedness, which unlocks the Dance of the Wicked Rune, you must find the Reckless Warlock somewhere in Azeroth. This new NPC can spawn outside the Gurubashi Arena, in Thousand Needles, in the Satyr area of Desolace, or in the very back of the Ogre cave in the Alterac Mountains. Speak with him to get the Brimstone Carving. Then, use Hellfire to damage yourself over and over again until the Brimstone Carving turns into the Rune of Wickedness.
Dance of the Wicked Effect | - Grants Dodge chance equal to your Spell Critical Hit chance each time you deal a Critical Hit to an enemy
- Critical Hits and Dodges both regain 2% of your maximum mana

RelatedThere's plenty for Shamans to love in the first two phases of the Season of Discovery, including a Two Handed Shaman Rune.
To get the Shadowflame Rune, head to about (80, 82.5) in Desolace to find Shadowbreak Ravine. Travel to the back of this area to find a Sacrificial Altar. Cast Shadow Ward on yourself, then interact with the Altar to start channeling. You will take nearly lethal damage if you aren't able to mitigate via Shadow Ward, as you cannot heal normally during this channel. Survive the channel by using this, consumables and other buffs, and special Shadow Resist gear. Completing the channeling process summons a Level 38 elite enemy named Seductress Ceeyna. Kill this enemy to get the Rune.
Shadowflame Effect | - Targets in a cone in front of the caster take a medium amount of Shadow damage and additional Fire damage over 8 seconds
- This effect can be consumed with Conflagrate
|
The Rune of Forbidden Knowledge (and the Demonic Knowledge Rune) unlocks via the Phase Two Dark Rider questline. To begin, head to Ariden's Camp in Deadwind Pass at around (52, 34.5) in the zone. Talk to the Dalaran Agent at the camp to get Ariden's Sigil. He will ask you to recover seven Dalaran Relics from Dark Riders throughout Azeroth. Each of the Dark Riders is about as difficult as a Dungeon boss at 40, but because all classes have one Rune tied to the SoD Dark Rider, it's not too hard to get a five to ten-man group together.
The Dark Riders can be found in Duskwood, Deadwind Pass, Swamp of Sorrows, Badlands, The Barrens, Desolace, and the Arathi Highlands. After killing each one, head back to the Dalaran Agent and give him the recovered Dalaran Relics. After completing each quest (which reward about 1.5g at Level 40), the Agent will give you a bag containing the Rune.
Demonic Knowledge Effect | - Increases your Spell Damage and Healing by 10% of your Demon's total Stamina plus Intellect combined
