Mammoths are some of the most sought-after ground mounts in World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King Classic, but they’re also some of the most expensive ones. If you have thousands of gold just lying around, the easiest way of getting your hands on a mammoth mount would be to simply buy one from Mel Francis in Dalaran. If you’re not swimming in cash, however, your best bet is to get the Ice Mammoth from the Sons of Hodir.

The Sons of Hodir sell two mammoth mounts, the cheapest of which will only cost you 850 gold. That’s quite a bargain all things considered. The catch is that you’ll need to complete an extremely lengthy quest chain before you’ll be allowed to buy it. Don’t worry, though, because this guide will give you a step-by-step breakdown of how to get your hands on the Ice Mammoth in no time, and - if you have the coin - on the Grand Ice Mammoth as well.

Sons Of Hodir Overview & Reputation Guide

The Sons of Hodir are a faction of frost giants residing in Dun Niffelem in the eastern part of Storm Peaks. You can buy a wide variety of goodies from them, including shoulder enchants, recipes, and the aforementioned mounts. The Sons of Hodir don’t like outsiders and are hostile to all players by default. To get them to sell you anything you’ll first need to get into their good graces.

Your first order of business is to clear out all the major quest hubs throughout The Storm Peaks. You can save yourself a lot of time by doing this while leveling up. The main hubs include Frosthold and Bouldercrag’s Refuge for Alliance players and Grom’arsh Crash Site, Camp Tunka’lo and Bouldercrag’s Refuge again for the Horde. Clearing all the hubs will unlock the first quest in the lengthy chain – They Took Our Men!, which is offered by Gretchen Fizzlespark in K3. It's worth noting that also you'll need to be at least level 77 to unlock the quest.

The next step is straightforward but pretty time-consuming. They Took Our Men! Begins a chain that consists of two dozen quests, ending with Sibling Rivalry. Some of the quests like Equipment Recovery and The Slithering Darkness are optional, however, you’ll still want to do them regardless because they award reputation with The Sons of Hodir.

You’ll need to be Revered with the faction in order to buy the Ice Mammoth, so every bit of reputation gained along the way will be helpful in the long run. By the time you complete Sibling Rivalry for Thorim, you should be Neutral with The Sons of Hodir and can start the second half of the quest chain.

Thorim in The Storm Peaks

The second half of the chain is a bit shorter than the first one and starts at Thorim with the quest Mending Fences, which involves killing a bunch of Stormforged Giants east of Dun Niffelem. While doing this quest it’s very important to keep an eye on an item called Slag Covered Metal, which drops from said giants. You’ll need this item to start the quest The Refiner’s Fire. Keep killing Stormforged Giants until you get it, even if that means killing more than the required amount.

Once you complete all of Thorim’s tasks you’ll finally be able to go to Dun Niffelem and meet The Sons of Hodir. Complete all their quests, including the side ones, and you’ll be Honored with the faction in no time. Being Honored with The Sons of Hodir will allow you to buy some useful items from Lillehoff, their quartermaster, but you won’t be able to get the Ice Mammoth mount just yet.

This final leg of your journey to acquire the mount will be the most time-consuming one. Since there are no more regular quests to complete, you’ll instead have to rely on dailies to keep growing your reputation. There are five quests you can complete each day, all of which start in Dun Niffelem. These are as follows:

  • Hot and Cold
  • Hodir’s Call
  • A Viscous Cleaning
  • Spy Hunter
  • How To Slay Your Dragon

In addition to doing dailies, you can also turn in two types of items to The Sons of Hodir to speed up your reputation gains. Namely, Everfrost Chips (350 rep) and Sons of Hodir Commendation Badges (520 rep). Everfrost Chips can be found sticking out of the ground throughout Storm Peaks, but they are very rare and difficult to find. Meanwhile, Sons of Hodir Commendation Badges are one of the possible rewards given by Archmage Timear in Dalaran for completing his daily dungeon quest.

Once you manage to reach Revered with The Sons of Hodir you can head over to Lillehoff and buy the Reins of the Ice Mammoth for 850 gold. The mount only costs 800 gold if you’re Exalted with the faction.

If you want the Reins of the Grand Ice Mammoth, you’ll need to keep grinding dailies and turning in items just like before. However, once you reach Revered you will unlock an additional way of earning reputation by turning in Relics of Ulduar.

Relics of Ulduar have a chance of dropping from most mobs in Storm Peaks, including mobs inside dungeons. In fact, the easiest way to farm them is to run Halls of Stone and Halls of Lightning. Alternatively, you could simply buy them from the Auction House if you can afford them. Once you have 10 of them, you can turn them in for 500 rep.

The Reins of the Grand Ice Mammoth is initially listed as costing a whopping 10K gold but after reaching Exalted the price goes down to 8K gold. That’s still expensive but well worth the price since the Grand Ice Mammoth can carry up to three players at once. The only other mount in Wrath of the Lich King Classic that can do that is the Traveler’s Tundra Mammoth, but that one costs twice as much.
