Review aggregation site Metacritic has already released its list of the best-reviewed games of each platform with titles like Forza Horizon 4, Into the Breach, and Red Dead Redemption 2 being recognized. Now, the site has released its list of the worst-reviewed games of 2018 and the results may surprise some gamers.
The top 10 worst-reviewed games of 2018, according to Metacritic, are:
- Shaq-Fu: A Legend Reborn (Metacritic average: 36)
- Underworld Ascendant (Metacritic average: 36)
- Hollow (Metacritic average: 36)
- One Piece: Grand Cruise (Metacritic average: 35)
- Super Seducer: How to Talk to Girls (Metacritic average: 35)
- Past Cure (Metacritic average: 34)
- Agony (Metacritic average: 34)
- Fantasy Hero: Unsigned Legacy (Metacritic average: 34)
- Gene Rain (Metacritic average: 32)
- The Quiet Man (Metacritic average: 29)
Some may be surprised that Metacritic's list looks the way that it does. Other than Agony which had reasonably high hopes attached to it, the other games on the list weren't featured on lists of the most disappointing games of 2018.
Shaq-Fu: A Legend Reborn, despite featuring an NBA legend and being a reboot of Shaq's classic gaming franchise, wasn't expected to be great. This perhaps explains that lack of disappointment when it was critically panned. Likewise, the release of Super Seducer: How to Talk to Girls was blocked on PlayStation meaning that plenty won't have been able to play the game and be disappointed by it.
On the other hand, some may be shocked that the most disappointing games of the year weren't among the list of the worst-reviewed. Games like Fallout 76, for example, has been heavily criticized since launch. Fans were already unhappy about Bethesda's decision to take the traditionally single-player franchise online and the technical issues suffered once they were able to play only added to that. Controversies surrounding the poor quality of the game's physical merch haven't helped things either, but this apparently wasn't enough to severely impact its reviews. Well, not enough to make it worse than The Quiet Man, at least.
2018 was a year of some bad releases and plenty of good ones, though. Games like God of War and Marvel's Spider-Man were praised by critics and fans alike, as were titles such as Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Red Dead Redemption 2, and Monster Hunter World. Gamers will be hoping that by the time Metacritic's 2019 end-of-year review lists roll around, once again, the good video games will vastly outweigh the bad ones.
