‘Step-siblings’ is a common trope in the anime industry, with many series featuring this dynamic relationship in peculiar yet intriguing ways. In terms of popularity, stepsisters certainly come out on top, as these endearing characters are bound to make viewers fall for their charm. However, not all stepsisters fit the mold of a caring sister, as some are filled with envy, disdain, and contempt for their step-siblings.
While negative connotations are rarely attributed to stepsisters, it certainly doesn’t negate the fact that many series are plagued by such rancid characters. Be it sibling rivalry or any other problematic behavior, some stepsisters have gone too far, setting a precedent as some of the worst stepsisters in anime history.
7 Sagiri Izumi – Eromanga Sensei
Being a shut-in, Sagiri relies entirely on her brother to take care of her, even forcing him to bring her food and water, along with other necessities. The untimely death of their parents may have been an extremely traumatic event for the child, but such harsh treatment of Masamune is certainly unwarranted.
Although Sagiri begins opening up and repairing her bond with her brother, the journey comes with many strifes, along with a ton of awkward moments. Despite being a 12-year-old, Sagiri tends to venture into some very graphic endeavors, with Masamune getting caught in the harmless yet explicit nature of Sagiri’s illustrations.
6 Riko Suminoe – KissxSis
Riko Suminoe never holds back when it comes to expressing her emotions for her stepbrother, Keita. However, she holds no interest in creating a false front, revealing her bold disposition outright. Being a part of the school’s Disciplinary Committee also gives her an edge over controlling parts of Keita’s life.
Riko can be quite cunning and resourceful, especially when fighting with her sister over Keita. However, her boldly open personal and sexual life leaves Keita quite exhausted, as dealing with her unending emotional outbursts can be quite relegating for her stepbrother.
5 Ako Suminoe – KissxSis
Most know Ako Suminoe as a responsible, mature, and well-mannered student, yet behind this facade is a perverted stepsister that will stop at no point to express her emotions for her stepsibling, Keita Suminoe. Despite being the manager of the Student Council General Affairs, Ako has no shame when abusing her authority to publicly make a pass at Keita.
Away from the public eye, Ako shows her true colors – a childish, whiny, and perverted teenager. Though she can get embarrassed quite easily, what matters most to her is to let Keita know how she truly feels, even if it means taking advantage of her position.
4 Mio Naruse – The Testament of Sister New Devil
Mio initially seemed to be a loving and kind stepsister, but looks can surely be deceiving, as the once tender-hearted sibling later turns out to be a member of the Devil Clan. While Mio and Basara’s relationship may seem nothing like step-siblings, the two still remain legally bound as siblings.
Mio’s sinister plans to make Basara her servant present her as an awful and deceitful stepsister, and though their circumstances later mended the relationship, the failed master-servant contract between two serves as a testament to Mio’s cunning motives.
3 Rui Tachibana – Domestic Girlfriend
While Rui may not be the worst stepsister out there, her aloof demeanor and odd antics surely put her on the off side. Her affection towards her new stepbrother, Natsuo, slowly becomes apparent as the series progresses, though her growth seems to stagnate due to the envy she bears for her sister, Hina.
Natsuo and Rui’s dynamics are prone to ups and downs, yet one aspect remains constant – Rui’s feelings for her stepbrother. However, these very feelings become a problematic element in the new family’s dynamics, as Rui is willing to go to any lengths to keep Natsuo away from Hina.
2 Akiko Himenokoji – OniAi
From separated twins to step-siblings, OniAi’s storyline features a number of shocking revelations, though Akiko’s disposition largely remains the same. With an overbearing brother-complex, Akiko will stop at nothing to gain her brother’s attention, be it through her harmless schemes or straight-up seductive antics.
Letting her feelings for Akito run rampant, Akiko tends to become consumed by jealousy whenever her brother interacts with other members of the student council. Considering her jealous nature and overbearing complex, Akiko’s actions can be quite manipulative and problematic, making her frustrating to deal with.
1 Hina Tachibana – Domestic Girlfriend
Hina Tachibana is related to Natsuo in several ways; as a teacher, stepsister, and lover. Though Hina is a kind-hearted person, her emotions get the best of her, as she is willing to trample on the feelings of her younger sister to have Natsuo reciprocate her feelings.
The matters of the heart are quite complicated, making one helpless to the sentiments that follow. However, Hina’s case is quite problematic, as she lets her feelings linger on despite being aware of the fact that Natsuo is her student. The glaring fact that Natsuo is underage makes this relationship even worse, not to mention how she ignores the relation that Natsuo had already fostered with Rui.
