Whenever there’s a group in an anime, there’s usually at least one character who has healing abilities to help out. They’re an essential part of the group and can be a real game-changer, but this is only the case if they’re good at their job. There are some powerful healers, like Tsunade from Naruto, Recovery Girl from My Hero Academia, and Giorna Giovanna from Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure.

Then there are the characters with healing abilities who are pretty useless. It’s not that these characters don’t have the power or skills needed to heal their comrades, but there are a variety of reasons why they’re no good. If anyone is looking for medical attention, it’s probably best to avoid these terrible anime healers.

10 Nelliel “Nel” Tu Odelschwanck (Bleach)

Ichigo Kurosaki Nelliel “Nel” Tu Odelschwanck (Bleach)

In her child form, Nel can heal others, but the way that she does it is pretty gross. Her saliva has a healing ability, but she can only do this by massaging her uvula, which causes her to throw up saliva. Of course, this sounds and looks gross, so it’s understandable why characters freak out when she heals them.

Nel doesn’t use this ability often, but it’s a good ability to have for emergencies. However, since she has to throw up in order to use it, no one is exactly lining up for her to heal them unless it's absolutely necessary.

9 Carla (Don’t Hurt Me, My Healer!)

Carla (Don’t Hurt Me, My Healer!)

In Carla’s defense, she does try her best to be a priestess. Unfortunately, Carla does more harm than good and in their first meeting, she accidentally puts a curse on Alvin. This curse forces the two of them to stay close because they’ll die if they stray too far apart. It also doesn’t help that Carla herself is pretty eccentric which causes Alvin a lot of headaches outside of battle.

She does have some form of healing abilities, but it’s not what some might expect. Overall, some might think that Carla is a total airhead, or a really good troll that's just pretending to be dumb and doing horribly as a priestess

8 Dende (Dragon Ball Series)

Dende (Dragon Ball Z)

The sad thing about Dende is that he has a great healing ability, but he’s hardly around enough to be even a little useful to the Z Fighters. During their time on Namek, he did use this ability a few times, but this made him a target when Frieza transformed into his final form. After this arc, Dende is pretty much sidelined for the rest of the series.

Even when he becomes Earth’s Guardian, Dende doesn’t really use his healing abilities much. At this point, Dende is a lot like his predecessor Kami and just stays on the sidelines, providing little help to anyone.

7 Akiko Yosano (Bungou Stray Dogs)

Akiko Yosano (Bungou Stray Dogs)

Yosano is an okay healer to have, but her ability, Thou Shalt Not Die, comes with one condition: she can only heal people who are fatally wounded and close to death. Anyone with non-fatal injuries can’t be healed by her ability so even her comrades must be close to death if they want to be treated. Because of this condition, Yosano is able to interrogate people by torturing them to near death and then healing them over and over.

This sadism isn’t just for enemies and she even enjoys bringing some pain to her comrades. When Atsushi Nakajima joined the agency, Jun’ichiro advised him not to reveal any kind of injury in Yosano’s presence unless he wants her “treatment.” While Yosano is good at what she does, her healing ability’s condition makes it somewhat useless.

6 Serara (Log Horizon)

Serara (Log Horizon)

The thing about Serara is that she’s a Druid, but her subclass is Housekeeper. Almost all of her skills are leveled up in Housekeeping, but she’s limited in her healing magic from her Druid class. She has the perfect class to be a great healer, but she spent most of her time doing Housekeeping as a coping mechanism.

To make it a little worse, Serara sometimes openly complains about her choice of subclass. She has the potential to be an awesome healer, but it’s going to be a long time before she gets there.

5 Miranda Lotto (D. Gray-Man And D. Gray-Man Hallow)

Miranda Lotto (D. Gray-Man And D. Gray-Man Hallow)

Granted, Miranda isn’t technically a healer, but her Innocence, Time Recovery, does have some healing factors. However, this is only temporary and once Miranda deactivates it, all damage that others suffered will return. It’s a nice and handy ability to have around, but it’s not an ability to heavily rely on.

Though it’s a temporary effect, Miranda has been a key factor in her comrades succeeding in battle. She tries her best to keep Time Recovery up and running long enough for them to get help, but, sometimes, it’s too much of a strain on her.

4 Porlyusica (Fairy Tail)

Porlyusica (Fairy Tail)

It’s not that Porlyuscica is totally useless, but once Wendy comes into the picture, she’s largely relegated to the sidelines. Porlyusica’s main way of healing others is by using herbs and medicine, but Wendy’s magic just outdoes anything she does. However, Wendy’s healing magic can only work on others and she can't heal herself. Porlyusica has come around a few times to help heal her, but it’s not as quick as Wendy’s magic.

Sadly, Porlyusica only appears a few times throughout the entire series and Wendy is usually traveling to do jobs since she’s part of Team Natsu. This leads to Porlyusica not being as useful as she could otherwise be.

3 Kai Chisaki, AKA Overhaul (My Hero Academia)

Kai Chisaki, AKA Overhaul (My Hero Academia)

Chisaki isn’t technically a healer either, but, like Miranda from D. Gray-Man, his Quirk does have a healing factor of sorts. His Overhaul Quirk is extremely lethal, being able to disassemble anything or anyone he touches, but he’s also able to reassemble them as well. He can heal anyone from injuries or illness by using his Quirk to reconstruct them back to a perfect state.

The deconstruction of his power is extremely painful and he used this power mostly on Eri to use her DNA to create the Quirk-Destroying Drug. He would destroy her body and then put it back together, though not perfectly since she has numerous scars from this. Now that he doesn’t have his hands anymore, he’s infinitely more useless.

2 Yukina (Yu Yu Hakusho)

Yukina (Yu Yu Hakusho)

It’s a little sad that Yukina wasn’t really explored after she was rescued. Yukina is actually a decently strong demon in her own right and has the power to heal others. Sadly, she is sidelined for the series and doesn’t really offer much to the group. She healed Kuwabara after his first battle with the Toguro Brothers, but that’s all that viewers really get to see from her.

Yukina doesn’t do much except support Team Urameshi during the Dark Tournament. Kurama is more or less the healer of the group since he’s able to grow plants that can heal his comrades when needed.

1 Mitsukake (Fushigi Yuugi)

Mitsukake (Fushigi Yuugi)

This one might be a bit controversial, but the thing with Mitsukake is that he’s hardly able to put his healing abilities to use. He’s healed his comrades a few times, but he wasn’t able to heal them when it really mattered. By the time he got to Nuriko after their fight with Ashitare, it was far too late for him to be of help. The only thing he could do was repair their body for burial. He wasn’t able to help Chiriko since Miboshi (a Seriyuu warrior) was possessing him.

It’s a little sad to say that Mitsukake was pretty useless throughout the series even though he had everything going for him. That said, he was able to redeem himself a little bit by giving up his life to heal all of the wounded in the vicinity.
