The Zombie Plague event in Wrath of the Lich King Classic is over, meaning it is finally safe to log into World of Warcraft Classic again. Players discovered the infestation was ending less than a week after the historic World of Warcraft event began. The Zombie Plague, also called the Scourge Infestation, is a notorious event from the Wrath of the Lich King Pre-Patch. During the event, players can be infected with a plague which turns them into a ghoul capable of attacking other players and NPCs, spreading the infection further and transforming Azeroth into a zombie-filled wasteland The event came to World of Warcraft Classic on September 6, and was set to run through September 13.RELATED: World of Warcraft: Incredible New Mount Available in Retail for Making a Death Knight in Wrath of the Lich King ClassicHowever, players discovered the Zombie Plague event in Wrath of the Lich King Classic seemed to be phased out on September 11. The next day, World of Warcraft Classic game developer Josh Greenfield confirmed the event was over. While he initially made a cheeky tweet about “modern Azerothian medicine” leading to a swift cure for the plague, a later tweet clarified the event’s ending was actually caused by an unexplained series of events, most likely due to 15-year-old code running on modernized servers.

This wasn’t the only surprise World of Warcraft Classic players experienced with the Wrath of the Lich King Classic Pre-Patch event. Just a few days prior, World of Warcraft Classic players discovered the Scourge Invasion phase of the Pre-Patch had begun a half week early, allowing players to farm exclusive rewards for a few extra days. Though Wrath of the Lich King Classic is not even out yet, it has already been full of surprises.

To be honest, few World of Warcraft Classic players are upset with the early end of the Zombie Plague event. While initially fun and memorable, the widespread chaos and griefing involved in the world PvP event quickly loses its charm, which is in itself a part of the charm. Most players are relieved they can log into the game and participate in the Scourge Invasion, a universally loved section of the Wrath of the Lich King Pre-Patch.

That said, some players are still sad to see the event go, especially early. Few events in World of Warcraft’s history can compare to the Zombie Plague, and it is unfortunate the chaotic event was cut early, despite the disruption it causes. The Zombie Plague event returned once before during the Shadowlands Pre-Patch, however; if players are lucky, maybe they will get the chance to participate in it again some day in the future.

World of Warcraft is available on PC. Wrath of the Lich King Classic launches September 26.
