Highlights

  • The Ruby Sanctum, the last raid in Wrath of the Lich King, will open on January 11 in World of Warcraft Classic.
  • The Ruby Sanctum is a smaller raid compared to major ones like Icecrown Citadel, but it sets up conflicts against the Black and Twilight Dragonflights.
  • The release of the Ruby Sanctum indicates that Cataclysm Classic is coming to World of Warcraft Classic, possibly as early as May 2024.

World of Warcraft Classic just announced the Ruby Sanctum–the last raid in Wrath of the Lich King–is opening on January 11. As the final major piece of content from the expansion, CataclysmClassic is officially right around the corner in World of Warcraft.

The Ruby Sanctum is a four-boss raid introduced near the end of Wrath of the Lich King. Though not nearly as large as major Wrath of the Lich King raids like Icecrown Citadel or Ulduar, the Ruby Sanctum was still memorable, and set up some of the big conflicts against the Black and Twilight Dragonflights that would come to a head during Cataclysm.

Now, in a recent World of Warcraft blog post, Blizzard has confirmed when players can expect this mini-raid to come to the throwback servers. Starting January 11, players will be able to challenge the 10- and 25-man versions of the Ruby Sanctum. These encounters drop gear of the same level as Icecrown Citadel, giving players even more opportunities to find their best-in-slot items as the expansion nears its end.

Within the Ruby Sanctum, players will have to face Saviana Ragefire, Baltharus the Warborn, General Zarithrian, and Halion in order to clear the instance. The Twilight dragon Halion is voiced by Matt Mercer–a famous voice actor who also voices Fyrakk, another dragon and end raid boss in World of Warcraft: Dragonflight. The raid is generally considered to be easier than the Lich King, so farming it will be a great way for players to help their progression against the iconic boss.

One of the most exciting things about the Ruby Sanctum’s release is that it heralds the coming of Cataclysm to Classic. While the expansion doesn’t have a release date yet, World of Warcraft confirmed Cataclysm Classic was planned for the first half of 2024. Considering most Wrath of the Lich King patches have had four to five months between them, players could expect Cataclysm to arrive as early as May, if not sooner.

That said, not everyone is excited about the idea of Cataclysm Classic. One of the major draws of World of Warcraft Classic is to experience Azeroth before the revamp introduced in Cataclysm. With the WoW Classic progression moving past Wrath of the Lich King, the only way to experience a pre-Cataclysm Azeroth will be through Classic Era–a fact many are not happy about. At the very least, with how popular World of Warcraft Classic Season of Discovery and Hardcore servers have been, players still have plenty of options through these retro servers.
